My Belgic army
« on: April 27, 2020, 12:07:45 AM »
About 10 months ago I wandered into a model shop near me and ended up buying a box of Warlord Games Celts and a box of paints; my first miniatures in about 14 years since I last bought some Warhammer as a teenager. Since then I have got pretty addicted, along with a group of mates who had also bought and played with GW models years ago, and had been secretly nurturing a passion for wargames ever since.

Anyway, the result has been this hefty ancient host, which I have decided are a tribe of the Belgae that gave Caesar so much trouble in his invasion, along with a clan of Germanic allies from across the Rhine.

I'll post some pics bit by bit. First is a panorama of the whole lot (no nice blue backgrounds to make it look realistic I'm afraid, just my garage!)

My armies:
- Henry VIII's army (WIP) 15mm
- Ancient Germans (28mm)
- Ancient Belgae (Gauls with German allies) (28mm)
- Massilian Greeks (Greeks and Gallic mercenaries/subjects) (28mm)
- A few EI Romans (28mm)
- Handful of WW2 British (15mm)
- A load of old 1993-1999ish Warhammer Orcs and Goblins

Here's the Germanic cavalry, led by their leader Choleric.

As you may know, the Germanic cavalry impressed Caesar greatly for the ferocity and aggression, even in spite of their sub-standard mounts, and the fact that they refused to use saddles on the grounds that they were for wimps! Apparently they would charge on sight any other horsemen so cowardly as to use saddles, confident that they would be able to outmatch them. Caesar recruited lots of these guys, and they were a great asset to him on many occasions and usually bested the Gallic horsemen in a fight.

I like these models - some are by Warlord, some by Crusader and some by Foundry.

I really enjoy reading posts where long term projects are brought to life...congratulations - that is indeed a “hefty host”...I like the wicker shields on the cavalry and look forward to seeing more

Yes, they look great. Also love the name Choleric. As historically documented in Asterix...?

Thanks gents.
Yes, Nic, that is the very same historical figure!  ;) well-spotted

Here's the first Germanic warbands; Victrix plastic figures which I think are really nice, though different in style to the various metal figures I have.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Another evening, another warband or two.

These two are more Germanics; figures from Foundry (my favourites, sculpted by Mark Copplestone, and all full of character and barbarian charm) and Black Tree Design (which fit well with the Foundry in terms of size and style, and are also pretty characterful sculpts). There are some Victrix mixed in there too.

This post features the first of the Celts in the army, along with some terrain I have made for them.
- The slingers; youths and slaves of the tribe, led by Ballistix.
- Some of the javelin-armed skirmishers

All of the these are by Warlord Games

Thanks again Nic.

This post is all of the Belgic warbands.
Fanatics first, my favourite unit, though probably the most work with all the tattoos and hand-painted shields. These guys in battle are exciting to use (I use Hail Caesar rules), as their charge can get them into close combat in a flash and wrong-foot your opponent. They are Crusader and A&A figures.

Next are the professionals, the chieftain’s retainers, in mail, helmets and armed with longswords. Oddly they have let me down in battle every time I had played so far, and usually break in their first fight!

Following them are all the warbands. Mostly Warlord plastics (very good value, decent figures) with some metal Crusader and Warlord models for variety of pose.
