Mike’s posted some additional comments on the scope of the range:
Basotho and Barolong; Basotho fought mounted by the time of the Sovereignty. They were obliged to fight the Barolong, Bergenaars/Griquas etc, loyalist settlers (British and Dutch), republican Boers, the British and finally the Orange Free State all within a few years.
Think also Sir Harry Smith v Pretorius at Boomplaats and 'Major Warden's War'. (1851) He was the British resident in Bloemfontein and started a war he couldn't finish with Moshoeshoe, (Moshesh contemporaneously), paramount chief of the Basotho. Battle of Viervoet.
Battle of Zwartkoppies (1845). 7th Dragoon Guards and redcoat infantry versus republican boer settlers (1845).
Battle of Berea (20 Dec 1852). General Cathcart (Governor of the Cape) v Moshoshoe's Basotho. 6000 African cavalry (more than Ney threw in at Waterloo!) against about 1,200 Brits, subdivided into three small columns (because that always works!).
