Suits, Defend the farm.
« on: May 11, 2020, 06:00:17 AM »
I'm thinking of making a set of miniature agnostic, co-op rules inspired by episode 4 of the Netflix show Love, Death, & Robots "suits". About country folk farmers in mech suits protecting their farmsteads from hungry aliens on a distant colonized planet. Players would customize their mechs and defend the farm from waves of little alien bugs & accasional big bug.

Has that already been done or are their rules that could be easily modified to play games like this?
I'm thinking of 28mm as that's my preferred scale and the mechs could have loads of detail, only need 1 per player. Any good minis come to mind to use as the Mechs or as good starting points? What about the bugs?

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

It you were willing to stretch to 15mm (which is a vastly more sensible scale for mechs) GZG have

You might also enjoy the video game Lost Planet 3 which is about a blue collar mech contractor doing this kind of work on a remote colony world.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I am loving those 15mm mechs but how big are they actually? You have a photo of 1 next to a 28mm person? Also what would be a good source for 15mm bugs?

Most of my collection is in 28mm and 20mm which is why I chose that scale first. Also only uesing 1 mech per player with games typically ment for 1-4 players. However the need for swarms of bugs would be easier/cheaper in 20mm or 15mm

For 28mm, the Konflict 47, Panzer Mech or Dust ranges may have suitable mechs.  For bugs, I'd imagine you can get plenty of the smaller Tyranids ('gaunts and 'stealers) relatively inexpensively (with plenty of less cheap bigger bug options).

Hey there did something similar a while back more mech on mech though.
This is one of the mantic 'suits' I converted with 28mm fig for scale.
It's got a ogryn hand cannon and a claw from maxminieu (I think!)
About 70mm to the top of the hood.
Hope this helps

Think these guys would make quite nice Bugs

https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/sf1506-carnosaurs/

(Scale shot)

15mm are about half the height of 28mm minis so... 1/8 the mass? Pretty small. Makes vehicles way more swooshable though.

Or these dudes from Khurasan

(They have some 15mm xenomorphs as well

More awesome suggestions and feedback. I'm starting to see the benefits of 15mm but I'm still leaning towards 20 or 28 since I have large collections of terrain already in those

As said, in 28mm West Winds Panzermech line could work:-

Or maybe utilise the variants of the Grizzly from Warlord?

Honourable mention to the Steampunk Power Loader from Northstar:-

Sounds like Starship troopers to me. Its out of production but the rules should be available through eBay and some miniatures are still available by rebelminis or, if you have a 3d-printer, thingiverse. I can't remember, if the rules allowed to customize the mechs

Man you guys have hit me with some really good suggestions. Now I'm really struggling with the scale I want to do mine at. I'll probably make the rules saleable from 15-28mm but I need to decide what I want to make mine. All of my current sci-fi and post-apocalyptic collections are in 28mm while on my Modern/near future is in 20mm only just started collecting 15mm ancients.
