'In The Bag!'

“Haz zer Englander began to singing like zer Canary?”
“Nien Herr Oberst!”
Major Shytes McCregor answered that one alright…
“This here Sasanach’s a Scothcman laddie! They’ll nea break us Potting if they canna even tell what country we’re from, the noo!”
Suddenly, out of the night came a loud bang and a piercing scream…
Privates Alf Tupper and Tom Plunkett broke cover and climbed onto the roof of the nearest building, and took up covering positions, as the rest of the rescue party snuck into Fookum dodging from cover to cover. The Lance Jack on the Bren slid his finger dramatically across his throat. His mate drew his bayonet and began to stalk the enemy sentry. Hearing a palm twig snap, the alert sentry swung up his Schmeiser and riddled his assailant, sprinted up and did the same to the hapless Bren Gunner!
Well roused now the Jerrys poured from their billets…

As the confused Germans streamed into the village square excellent shooting from the rooftop cover does for two of them…
Unfortunately the NCO leading the Black Watch rescue party gets spotted and hit by a volley of enemy fire. Under covering bursts of Schmeiser fire he is finished off with the bayonet!
The Germans flood into the compound which Alf and Tom are holding, neither of the two B Company stalwarts could shoot at the enemy without presenting their melons as perfect targets to the covering DAK machine gunner. Stick grenades exploded all over the roof, the final one blowing the two of them off and down into the Wadi…
Dazed and lightly wounded the two of them snuck off down the wadi, tails firmly between legs, but still making time for a morale restoring brew of char!
Next morning prisoners and escort formed up…
“Now mine good Major, you will, how do you say, go into the bag? Warn the man with the bagpeep that if he toots it, he will be shot... Vorwarts Menschen!”
*
*Just to make it clear...this is an attempt at humour concerning the, to some, terrible drone/wail of this Scottish musical instrument, it's not implying members of the DAK shot prisoners out of hand.

Beautiful cover art!
I read of how these were mostly painted by Italian artists in oils and mailed to the publishers.
I wonder where many (most, all!) are today.

I have a book about that stunning artwork. An old studio was to be cleared out, in Italy if memory serves, and it was full of original illustrations done for the comics during the 60s...
