I've been asked a few times to do a horse painting video, so here it is !

I discuss equipment, paints, techniques, figures etc so have a watch if you fancy a go at the alchemy of oils.

Thank you, I’m struggling with horses at the moment, seem to have forgotten everything about painting them.  You’ve set my homework for today :)

Nice old technique, and nothing beats the smell of oil paints and true turpentine around your workbench.  :-*

Very true it's old skool, but a lot of new gamers aren't aware of it, hence the post. The acrylic base coat is a new twist on the old theme

Your timing is impeccable sir! Only last week I lashed out on a selection of oil paints to do filters and weathering effects on vehicles and was contemplating doing gee gees next.

Do you think this technique would work with water based 'oil' paints. I really can't stand the smell of turps!

Back in the seventies I was a grand master at this technique for painting Hinchcliffe neddys, some even grander masters could do it on Historex 'big boys's toys'.
I bet if I tried it today I'd wind up with a giant blob of brown oil paint that takes a week or two to dry.

I remember watching Max Longhurst give a seminar at one of the Kensington Salutes (1980/81?) where he showcased and explained his technique for this using Historex horses. Amazing to see how a master could achieve so much "texture" on what was an almost polished smooth surface. On a heavily converted Historex model of Napoleon mounted on Marengo he had on display the horse was done with a grey and pink basecoat.
True artistry.

Hi John,

Apologies but I have not used water based "oil" paint, in fact I didn't know it existed  :)

If it had the same properties as oil based paints then I don't see why not, it would be an interesting experiment to compare the two.

Hi John, I do, I currently use acrylic paints for black and grey horses, I've struggled to get the same effect with those colours in oils as I do with browns.

A top tutorial Ken and great to see the oil wipe method in detail. The nuances of this approach are very hard to pick up on, say from a book, it's great top see the subject treated in some depth and detail  8) 8) 8)
