South Georgia 1982
« on: May 23, 2020, 11:53:10 AM »
So this is going to be a slow burner
Which is still in the scoping and acquiring lumps of metal phase

Been looking for a while for a modernish skirmish game- which isn’t asymmetrical, the goal being - small reasonably balanced forces, troops with similar kit, infantry focused

And the chance to game attacker/defender/encounters and missions for both sides

Which basically means South Georgia 1982

Aim will be platoon level force for both sides
& a few extras (Landing craft, landies, helos, sub conning towers, elephant seals...)
Few tin sheds and jetties etc for tabletop

Prevaricated a while before sticking with 28mm - basically because I like painting at the scale

May make helos tricky :/

Started with a few Gripping Beast R Marines (which arrived in 48hrs!!)
In the metal they’re far nicer than they look on the web

Time to get practicing camo...

Yes - an interesting one to watch. Like the photo as well; I much prefer the eighties 'tache look to today's tatts.... :D

Deffo the ‘Gringo Tache’ the better look.  Sadly, at that point in my career as a young Trooper , I could only manage bum fluff on me top lip! 😬😬

I like the look of those figures. Great idea for a project. Will follow with interest.

Those with a nervous disposition, look away now!

I had a go at a 'tache, not too successful, in the '80s!   :o

Yeah, I started scratching just looking at that photo - and it wasn't due to the 'tache.   >:(

I was giving my first aid kit a clear-out a couple of years ago and found a packet of circular plasters that I'd bought in 1989 as nipple-protectors...

They were good when worn in for a couple of years lol better than those crisp packet things that replaced them anyway.
I digress, really looking forward to how this turns out, especially looking forward to the terrain, rocks, snow, wriggly tin huts, half sunk submarines.

Bugger the sub’s conning tower you want a whole Drummond class corvette to use as an anti-armour target. ;D

You probably know anyway, but that photo of the blokes on the jetty is a colourised one. I thought it looked odd then realised I've seen it loads of times in B&W. It's not that good, apologies if you're the colouriser.

yep very dodgy colouring, not mine but the photo does set the character pretty well

So tempting, and maybe one day... for starters though -given the size of table I’m looking at, have arbitrarily planned  to replace the naval forces of 2 countries with 1 LCM doing service under 2 flags

The photo below of Grytviken basically just says “tabletop”
Again very arbitrarily will model the scenery  around it - 4 1-2ft square boards that can see service elsewhere - rusty industry, jetty’s,tin sheds and open ground

Sourced a 1/48 Wessex for Humphrey, struggling somewhat with finding a Puma- and may have to switch out for a Huey or Lynx

Heller do (or did) a 1/48th Puma kit.  I know because the bloody things kept coming up in search results on eBay when I was looking for 1/100th Pumas for my South Africans.  So have a look on eBay, but search for '1/48 SA330 Puma' or you'll just get wall-to-wall listings of Sdkfz 234/2 Puma.

Actually, the Heller Puma, like much of their earlier stuff is listed as 1/50.

There’s also a Solido diecast Puma which purports to be 1/50 but is apparently much smaller.

On the subject of Falklands era choppers, Solido do a very nice diecast 1/50 Gazelle, which really is 1/50, I have a pair of them.

When I first saw the photo I thought it was a tabletop layout!
