How Would YOU Dress Up Space Pirates?
« on: May 28, 2020, 08:26:04 AM »
Would a colorful sash suffice, to give them that colorful feel, at least for the captain?

Reminds me a bit of the Red Sash Gang in Tombstone, but it might do.

Thoughts?

Dan
PS.  Didn’t/Doesn’t RAFM have some guys labeled as “space Pirates”?  If so, what specifically gave them that feel?

Why not? The essence of pirates is freedom, so you could mix people in camo fatigues with guys wearing tiger tights

How weird - I;m working on a load of space pirates at the mo and have been thinking about this a lot. I like the Rogue Trader approach - a mix of 'sci-fi' clothes and some nods to classic pirates. Baggy pants but sci fi boots, for example.

I like the slightly silly, pulpy end of sci-fi though, so others' mileage may vary.

There was a contest on Deviantart, regarding this very subject. I can't see much more than if I'd just searched "space pirate", though.

I would probably have the motley bunch of non-uniformed working-class spacers in their favourite but worn-out used future style clothing and equipment kit, maybe battle jackets like metalheads or bikies, maybe a goth or emo, and some with some quite obvious cybernetics/bionics or biomods. Crazy mix of weapons, body armour models, and definitely powered armour and spacesuit armour, often unrecognisable from its original state due to scavenging parts for repairs and not-exactly-factory upgrades.
Skulls may exist as a matter of course, with metalheads and space bikies on the crew, but it shouldn't be there if it is an overtly pirate-y symbol. After all, who do you suspect is going to rob you and leave you out in space to die?

Or, perhaps:

Whilst I think the temptation is to give each space pirate a unique costume, a bit of visual coherency goes a long way. The way I'd approach it would be to select a small palette of desaturated colours (perhaps a white, a washout out blue, greys and browns) and a single spot colour (a bright red or yellow). Every figure's outfit would be comprised of the palette, with one key item picked out in the spot colour (a headband, striped trousers, a sash etc).

What about frostgrave crewmen, with the Northstar  pirate conversion heads and hand weapons and scifi guns?

I'm probably showing my Games Workshop origins here, but I find that V's Into the Void... project is exactly how I picture Space Pirates.
