Anybody make a 1/50 or 1/48 Joseph Stalin tank
« on: May 31, 2020, 01:13:19 PM »
I’ve seen the rather excellent Tamiya kit, but nothing else?
My soviet collection includes quite large and chunky sculpts for the figures, so I’ve collected all large scale armour etc.

Thanks

I’m beginning to think I may have to get a 1/56 scale version!
It’s a big tank so maybe won’t look out of place next to my big figures?

But this poses other questions, like which one of these should I get?
 lol

What's wrong with the Tamiya kit?  Tamiya kits kind of build themselves....

There's only the Tamiya IS-2 in 1/48th scale as far as I'm aware.

Warlord do a plastic kit in 1/56th. Die Waffenkammer also have one in resin.  Both are comparable detail wise.

Otherwise there's 3D prints. However none that I've seen hold a candle to the hand tooled kits.

That's your lot as far as I'm aware. Even less options for the IS-3, and I had to convert an IS-2 to make an IS-1 for the lack of kits (good luck finding any of the later models in any of these scales).

Agreed, default position for anything like this should be start with Tamiya then look for a compelling reason to use something not as good.

Tamiya kits are detailed but do not have a lot of small fragile parts to break off.

Have you built any of theirs before?

Atlantis has released the Aurora JS3 in 1/48.

https://atlantis-models.com/models-military/

That would be a perfect gaming model - just add some fishing weights or old bolts inside to give that “heft” (Tamiya does that with metal hulls or weights).

I found a build video of it online.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UdwkUTOLbGo

This would make a perfect gaming kit - not too many small fragile pieces and very easy to assemble.

You could ask Rich H nicely.

In addition to the Tamiya IS-2, Hobby Master make a prebuilt, pre-paint, IS-2 in 1/48.

If you search ebay, you may well come across the ancient 1/48 Aurora IS-3 kit.

The Tamiya IS-2 isn’t a difficult build btw.

I’ve looked for the Hobby Master model, and I have seen one in the past, but I’m blowed if I can find one now!

lol found a HM one on eBay!
Trouble is it’s expensive and in German livery!!!
Painting it isn’t too much of a problem, but that defeats the high price.

I should also mention I preferably need TWO of these bad boys!

Anybody got any to sell....  lol

Most of the Hobby Master one's I saw in the shops a few years back were either in Czech, Polish or the aforementioned German livery, so I'm not surprised. IIRC they weren't too expensive in the shops when they first came out.

You could try creative word searches on wish and aliexpress.

Their search engines are okay, but the sellers do not list products with accurate key words for finding specific items for sale.

I have bought 1/48 prepainted tanks off both for quite inexpensive prices BUT it seems like luck a lot of the time.
