Gallic Shield Transfers
« on: June 12, 2020, 01:20:35 PM »
I have a Wargames Foundry Gaulish army to paint for Clash of Spears and looking around for shield transfers to save me some time.
My go to site is LBM Studios but they do not have any for Gauls/Gallic Celts. Before I email Steve Hales, does anyone know if his other ranges such as Gripping Beast, Warlord etc will fit Foundry shileds?

Cheers,

Graham W

Hi, I can't comment on other manufacturers shield sizes but when I painted my Foundry Celtic army many years ago I used Veni Vidi Vici waterslide. Not as nice as LBMS but plenty of Celtic "swirl" designs etc. Unfortunately I've just checked his website and the  business may be a victim of COVID-19. Might be worth trying to drop him a line though.

I wouldn't hold out much hope with Steve Hales. His recent  advice to me for decals for my Aventine Galatians was to buy a pack of Victrix plastic Gallic shields ( £15 for 60) and then use Victrix decals.

Thanks for the info SJWi.

I have written to Steve but if I don't get a reply it looks like I will be painting them.

Cheers,

Mindenbrush if you go to the wargames foundry section on LBMS decals website you can find some shield designs common for both germans and celts so you could use those.

I was idly checking Magister Militum this morning and I found they stock the "Veni Vidi Vici" decals, including those for Celts,. They are not as detailed as LBMS but (a) are available an (b) are quite effective.

Worth a look.

I'm sure you've already thought of this but why not buy some 'Celtic' shields from another manufacturer who does have the requisite LBMS transfers?

I don't think the shields are all that much different in size (and shape).

Perhaps you could use some for another maker with some Micro Set and Micro Sol as well as trimming and/or edge painting?

Thank you for all the suggestions.

I talked to Steve at LBM and he said the issue was with one of the Foundry Gaulish shields has a central reinforcing spine that runs the complete length of the shield and joins the raised rim that goes around the outside, this would require a split transfer.

I checked out the VVV transfers, they only come in 4 colours whereas most artist concepts show multi colours on the shields.

Cutting and trimming the decal/transfer would be a bit fiddley and I might lose my patience with it.

Steve recommended Victrix shields and transfers but as SJWi stated that is an additional cost ( £15 for 60 shields) and I am not a great fan of plastic.

Gripping Beast have suitable metal shields but again another cost incurred and the current slow postal system here in Canada would mean a very long wait.

As I paint my shields separate from the figure and then bond them on before varnishing I think I am going to try some freehand on the oval shields with the central reinforcing spine but buy transfers for the others.

I might contact Rich of TFL as he has painted Foundry Gauls and Early Germans for his new ruleset Infamy, Infamy so he might know if Early German transfers fit Gaulish shields.

Thanks again for the comments, appreciated.

Cheers,

Graham W

There may be another option.

Warlord make Celtic shield transfers.

Warlord are an option as they do smaller shield packs and 2 sets of transfers 👍

Perhaps you could even use their transfers on the metal shields.

We've been doing custom decal sets for years:
https://company-b-models-and-miniatures.myshopify.com/pages/custom-decal-design

We've been doing a lot of white transfers lately for armies.

My laser printer will do high res colors with very high resolution. Sorry the below image is StarWars.  but you can see the transfers we do on the shoulder Pauldrons.  I can color match pretty much any color.
