WWII Russian film recommendations please.
« on: June 16, 2020, 09:42:52 AM »
Hi,

I recently watched "Fortress of War" on Dvd and was most impressed and was hoping that someone could recommend a few Russian made movies on the Great Patriotic War for my viewing.  I've already seen " Come and See", which was excellent but gruelling, and have "Panfilov's 28" and "Tankers" on my radar.  Not forgetting "T-34" which I really rate.  Many thanks in advance.

Richard.

I have seen "Tankers", "Battery Number One", and "Tanks for Stalin".
Depends on what you are looking for. All three say they are based on
historical incidents. But seen to be a little more heroic than historical.
All three have great equipment. Some one in Russia is doing a great
job with restoring WWII vehicles and equipment. Even the fake
Panzer IV's don't look too bad. I found them to be interesting.

There is a very strong heroic/propaganda feel to many of the recent Russian WW2 I've watched - but that's not a criticism.  It's just a weirdly welcome change from the self-deprecating/uber-guilt that is present in most common Western WW2 movies/shows, etc.

Stalingrad is completely okay.  White Tiger is fun enough.  Panfilov's 28 Men is okay as well (it's on Netflix, or was).  T-34 is just silly tank fun with a lot of cool CGI.  Take them all with a grain of salt, and have a good time!

For some more historic action, with what clearly appears to be actual explosives and Russian tanks, there is Men Against Tanks:

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

And if you like that, there is Men Against Men:

Thanks for all the recommendation chaps - you've given much to mull over and ,Yes, Wildman II there are some fantastic vehicles on display in some of these films which look to be the real deal.  Did I see a real KV-2 in "Tankers"? or was it just a very good mock-up?

Please keep 'em coming if you've any more.

This model of the tank was built at the Mosfilm film studio on the basis of a repair and recovery vehicle, which itself was made on the basis of the IS-2. For him, several versions of dummies of a tank turret were made (type KV-1 and KV-2). This tank starred in many Soviet and Russian films about the Second World War. For the film "Tankers" (in the Russian version - "Indestructible"), the tank was further developed to give a more authentic look.
Here's a story about this model - alas, in Russian:

The film tells about the activities of "Smersh" - the Soviet counterintelligence.

Trial of Roads (1985)

The Dawns Here Are Quiet - either the 1972 original or the 2015 remake.

And keep an eye out for Podolsk Cadets - though I think it's UK and US title is Last Frontier. Switch on subtitles and auto-translate in the settings
