1950s U.S. Coastguard Lifeboat Crew Question
« on: June 18, 2020, 12:51:03 PM »
Can anyone help me with the ranks and titles of a U.S. Coast Guard four man lifeboat crew during the 1950s?

Would one be a Captain? One a bosun etc?

Also would they have any weapons at all?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I don`t know if this is any help, but maybe this article detailing a rescue operation in 1952 is of interest to you:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/19/obituaries/andrew-fitzgerald-dead.html

From the article:

"They were Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bernard C. Webber, coxswain of the anonymously labeled motorized lifeboat CG-36500, and his crew, Petty Officer Third Class Andrew Fitzgerald, the engineman, and Seamen Richard Livesey and Ervin Maske."

That appears to provide some insight as far as titles and ranks of the crewmembers are concerned.

Much obliged Mrcleh.I had looked at the  Pendleton rescue after seeing the movie The Finest Hours, a fantastic story. I'm wondering if that was the usual type of crew as I'm aware two dramatic rescues were going on at the same time so they may have  made do with who ever was left.

I was navy, not Coast Guard, and much later, but extremely unlikely that a crew of four would be led by even the most junior officer.  Almost certainly, it would be a Petty Officer.  There might be exceptions but I would expect they are extraordinary circumstances - if ever.
