looking for something new to play
« on: July 04, 2020, 03:20:28 AM »
In the mood to try something new. I am looking for a game that has 3-5 figures per side.
Any period or genre. What would you recommend?

At a first glance, 3-5 figures is tough limitation, but when you start to think about it there are loads of potential games. I eas quite intrigued by your question and I often find inspiration in movies or books and there you can find many scenes that can provide a potential small wargame:
-Wild West gunfight
-Samurai
-Three musketeers
-Pirates
-Gangster shoot-out
-Gladiators
-Snipers(WW1/WW2)
-Napoleonic (Sharpe)
Etc

Another avenue could be historical situations involving a few characters. My favourites here are encounters where kings or famous leaders personally were involved in combat and the outcome could have a significant impact on the course of history:
-Gustavus Adolphus fell at Lutzen 1632
-Charles X almost killed at Warzaw 1656
-Louis Napoleon killed by Zulus 1879
-Richard III died fighting at Bosworth 1485
-Vlad the Impaler killed fighting Turks 1476
Etc

For miniatures I would go for 40mm if available for the action chosen

Please post your game once you decided and good luck with your project  ;)

Start by tracking down the Brink of Battle rules (if you don't have them already).  They provide a smorgasbord of opportunities for just such games.  Not my thing so I sold the set of the rules I had on last year, maybe the year before.  For me, a small game is 150 or so figures - per side!  Or several times that - per side!!!

The Fistful of Lead stable of rules would suit you I think. Multi-genre and very cinematic with a minimal figure count. There are various supplements for different genres as well  :)
cheers

What about battletech? Big stompy robots shooting the crap out of each other?

I can also highly recommend 7TV. We had some great games of that! Really fun rules. Maybe slightly more figs per side. Usually about 7-8 depending on the cast.

Fistful of lead every time for me.
Any period, and only needs 5 Figures.
We’ve used them for loads of games in different periods.

Having been introduced to FFoL by Flatpack, Hasbeen, Vodkafan and gents, I can honestly say I was impressed at how easy to pick up and fun to get little used minis on the table.  I have played a sci fi game and a Napoleonic one with them and enjoyed both.

I wouldn’t look to them for a serious  or in depth period skirmish, but they are particularly useful for a group of mates to sit about, take the rip and hopefully fulfil the odd objective without getting bogged down in complex tables.

Thanks Guys,

Not so much looking for rules but an actually game with figures and rules.
One I am thinking about, for example, is Burrows and badgers. Any other
ideas?

Thanks!

+1 to Fist Full of Lead, but also +1 to 40mm.
If I was starting a new period I would go to 40mm.
Unfortunately I am already heavily invested in 28mm (in lots of periods)

B&B is fun and not too detailed.  Plays out in a couple of hours.  Campaign progression means characters get harder....great minis, lots of fun.

WWI dogfighting is the only one that wouldn't look ridiculous.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Hi, what about "Normandy Firefight"? This is a very small-scale WW2 skirmish game that needs about 3-6 figures per side.  I guess anything "3 Musketeers-ish" would be interesting. I have the old set "All For One" sold by Redoubt Games, which had a scenario booklet as well.  You may well need more figures for the non-Musketeer side. The Redoubt figure range was quite extensive but I believe there are more recent figure ranges as well.

Pulp alley.

Only need a few figures and the rules can work for pretty much any type of figures.
