The Tournee - Crossed Lances Jousting
« on: July 04, 2020, 11:21:26 AM »
Having bought both crossed lances books I thought I might lay out a small selection of my late medieval civilians and onlookers, and conduct a grand tournament (archery contest, lists, and foot melee). I know that the authors of Crossed Lances are on here, and its obvious that a lot of work and enthusiasm has gone into both books; However I think they could have done with a little more proof reading, and perhaps an artistic overhaul, more photos of painted minis or heraldry and less grainy screenshots from wikicommons.

Crucially - was the game fun? well I had a fun time rolling some dice and moving my knights around, however at times the obfuscated rules explanation and low res cards got in the way of my enjoyment of the game as intended. I feel that the game falls between two posts, its main mechanic is too simple for a complex ongoing campaign (frostgrave style warband building), however it overburdens "roll 2 D6 and compare the result" with wordy text and examples of play which aren't very clear.

I haven't had a chance to have a go at the mounted melee yet, but I did enjoy some aspects of the foot melee, and will probably play the crowd events again with a homebrew jousting and archery "mini-game".
