Mammoth paints Fogou scenery - Shanty hut
« on: July 04, 2020, 05:11:06 PM »
I recently got a couple of piece of terrain from the wonderful Fogou models - one of which was this wonderful beehive hut.
I've seen this kit many times and always liked it, but until holding it i didn't realise how wonderfully detailed it it - the texture if sharp and deep. Casting is excellent, And as a side note, this model was cast in jesmonite rather than polyurethane resin which if excellent. For those who perhaps don't spend their evenings researching sculpture materials (you're missing out!) jesmonite is a water based acrylic compound, a sort of resin plaster hybrid made of an aggregate powder and a liquid acrylic. once it's cured it is ROCK hard and captures detail like nothing else, so it'd perfect for terrain as it can more than withstand a bit of bashing about.

I initially gave this kit a white undercoat, then a brown wash, before adding a 1:1 brown grey basecoat and picking out specific stones in pure grey or brown - then a pure grey drybrush followed by a brown wash, green streaking, and finally green and brown oil washes towards the base,
Moss was added with green oxide pigment and lastly some clump foliage and dry roots glued in place to give it some age.

All in all a really lovely piece of terrain that i was able to paint whilst watching redlettermedia videos, I'll be buying more of these to play games of super tiny skirmish or planet 28 in the near future.

(and photography wise -- A small wooden hill i knocked up on the bandsaw, some old fur, large roots and a bit of clump foliage make a passable backdrop.)

Wonderfully sculpted stone on that model and your painting of it is perfect.

You have done an amazing job with these Nic, and extolled the virtues of Jesmonite better than I've managed to in the past! I myself am planning to cast a few in sand-coloured resin for use with Planet28, just need to knock up some comm arrays to go with them.

This hut and more are available here https://www.fogoumodels.co.uk/dark-age

I look forward to seeing them!

I'm always happy to rave about good casting material - compared to the gassy resins you often find used on terrain pieces it's great to see something different and well utilized.

Really nice - I'm intrigued by your folk horror project, looks interesting.

I'm 90% of the way through a load of desert buildings from Fogou, absolutely love 'em.

I couldn't resist another one!

This is one of fogous shanty town models - again cast from high strength jesmonite.
I wanted this one to look quite dank, like it was hidden away in a patch of woodland or some dripping underpass.

Painting wise it was a white undercoat, then a layer of citadel brown contrast, an orange drybrush, a layer of chipping medium and then some blocks of colour - chip the colours away and add model mates rust wash, mud wash, and some pigments here and there.

Finally I stuck on some 2000AD transfers from warlord games (no idea where i got them but they're pretty nice.)

I think i MIGHT have overdone the weathering on this one, But I'll be getting more of these. (my instinct says these should stack quite nicely but I've yet to find out.)

I've also painted up a bunch of drystone walling, so more pictures to come...
