Long Barrow for ROSD and Frostgrave
« on: July 11, 2020, 03:00:48 PM »
Since I finished my standing stones and then visited Waylands Smithy last weekend I have decided to build a long barrow.  Foam construction

Pollyfilla slopes

Stones primed with Gesso with sand floor and details added.

I have to paint the interior before I finish building the hill as it will be visible but not accessible.

Judging by the quality of your standing stones, I expect this to look spectacular.

Update for the evening.
Finished the stone lintel and painted the interior.

Glued the corkboard roof on.

Same shot with a flash.

Just waiting for the morning and the glue to completely set.

A great idea, excellently executed - love the shots with the roof on.

As with the standing stones, the green moss/slime on the walls is very atmospheric.

Is it based upon an actual barrow? I would have been tempted to have used more of the barrow, for a second chamber, but I’m guessing there is a good reason that you didn’t.

 :)

It is not based on an single Barrow but an amalgamation of several.  The three chambered barrow idea comes from my recent visit to Waylands Smithy.  I compressed the entire structure by shortening the entrance and the back side to save space on the table.

Your second question is a bit more complicated.  All of the real Barrows that I have seen and read about only have chambers in a small portion of the whole mound hence building on one side.  I did add a small excavation in the side of the Barrow to give the impression grave robbers have been visiting.  Even though I am a big believer allowing players to use the whole piece of terrain, in this case I decided to limit access to the interior and seal the top.  This is so I would not create any unnatural straight lines on the piece of terrain by having a lid.  Having straight lines for a lid across the top of the mound would upset my calm.

Thanks for the compliments all.
Here is where I finished up today. Surface was levelled out with pollyfilla then textured with sand. Stonework needs a final filter of green to simulate moss.  I have started working on the flocking but it is taking a bit of time.

You definitely made the right choice in not having a lift off lid - it looks great as a terrain piece already, and that is before you’ve added any foliage.

 :)
