... and my bear was based for cowboys!
No doubt ridden by Yavapai Pete. :D

"Then he rode o'er a rise and battin' his eyes
A-lookin' down into a swale,
He'd come to the lair of a she grizzly bear,
And she was a-holdin' the trail.

He took a long strand of barb wire in hand,
And crawlin' along on the ground,
He made a big scoop with that barb wire loop
And they both went around and 'round.

Then he mounted that bear with a handful of hair,
For a quirt used a live rattlesnake,
He rode with a rush out thru the buck-brush,
A-swearin' that beast he would break.

To the ranch they did go where Pete hollered "whoa,"
Then asked the boss what he'd pay--
"My mount is docile fer I've rode her a mile,
And we're a-huntin' a job today."

Well...not a masterpiece of painting tbh....but it will do.

Like the stone structures and trees, it needs static grass yet, hopefully that will arrive this week, along with some clay pots to decorate it by dotting a few outside the huts and next to the fire.  I also need to sort a few wood piles.  But it’s getting there.

That's great! What is it?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Well it looks pretty bloody good to me  :D

Just a suggestion, I think you need a giant cauldron in the middle for cooking unfortunate explorers in?

Looking at your village, I keep seeing the giant pot scene from King Solomon's mines in my head :D

Good stuff

“What is it?”!!!!

It’s a bloody elephant!

It’s a setting for what will initially be “Fist Full of Denarii”!  Needs more trees yet and I need to paint a few minis.

Storm wolf - thanks!  Sensible comment!

Thanks!  And I always look forward to your input Pete!

So, a question as I can’t quite seem to get the answer anywhere.

Centurions in auxiliary units.  Are they “citizens” or not?  were they moved from the legions to look after auxiliary units or were they raised from within the auxiliary ?

And, as I’m awaiting delivery of an Osprey guide, were their breast plates leather or steel ?

Cheers

They might have possibly been iron (I have serious doubts about that) but certainly not steel as the technology for large hammered breast plates of steel was not around until the Late 14th Century- thus the gradual implementation of larger plates covering the body of the Medieval knight reaching the zenith in thew Late 15th/Early 16th Centuries.

Think of Lorica Segmenta- relatively small metal plates combined to make a larger overall armour

I'm certainly no expert on the armours of Late antiquity so I'd be interested to hear what the Late Classical take on this is as Roman metallurgy may have been more advanced.  :)

Thanks, I kinda meant “metal” when I said steel..you are correct in pointing ths5 out however, cheers.

Interested though whether they may have had moulded leather breast plates also?

Not really something I know much about though my instincts say leather or bronze if it's a large enough surface given the historical time frame. Erring more towards leather.
