Space 1889, Ship Plan Views?
« on: July 17, 2020, 02:42:43 AM »
Of the books in my collection, the old Cloudships & Gunboats book has the most complete collection of ships' plans.  But those are very limited: there is the top view deck schematic with the weaponry notations and a side view of each ship.

I think that's what I worked with way back when I built small scale models for playing the Spanish-American War campaign from Ironclads & Ether Flyers.

Is there any better source(s) with full 3 plan views?  I've spotted a few while hunting google images, but haven't been able to track down if any of the RPG material or anything else has full visual references.

Cat its been a while since I've tinkered with Space 1889 ships. But if I remember rightly Blackcampbell .com had a lot of cut away diagrams and drawings.
For this interior I just used the basic floor plan and the referenced the illustrations and descriptions trawling through Space 1889.

Thanks for the link.  Alas, only a few ship illustrations.  I had come across those in google images before; but didn't find any other on the blog.

You may have already seen these, but the Heliograph site has a few 'nef floorplans tucked away.

e.g. http://heliograph.com/trmgs/trmgs1/majestic.shtml

Just to be sure, you're actually looking for side and front/back views?

Yes.  I've come across the Aphid and a few other bigger ships online; but not for other smaller ships like the Harpon, Ranger, Mikasa, etc.

Yeah, not having much luck either. I thought of Mateen Greenway, but his are three quarter views, and I had in mind the poster from the Kickstarter, but that's on Blackcampbell as well.

I THINK I had a larger version of that downloaded somewhere, but not showing. I was going to print out ships myself, long ago and far away.

I've a fair pile of the original books, and will have a peek tonight.

Cat,

I assume you still have Ironclads and Ether Flyers. Are the side drawings on page 62 insufficient to your needs? I see there's a Harpon there, but rough indeed. I'd still take a scan/copy from my PDF and using stone-knives-and-bear-skins (*cough cough* MS Paint) make do.

Also, in the front of Cloud Captains of Mars there's are black and white line images of several smaller vessels that might help.

Of course, I've not looked at Cloudships and Gunboats again to see if I'm making poor offerings to your tastes.

Doug

PS Here's the Kickstarter version of the 'the poster', probably the one I intended using, and much higher resolution. https://clockwork-publishing.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/SP1889_Luftschiffe_Remake_01.jpg

Doug, thank you for digging in and trying to find info.

Yes, I have Ironclads & Ether Flyers.  The side views and deck schematics give a minimum to work with, and I used those way back when to make small scale models so we could play the Spanish American War campaign on the dining room table.

Cloudships & Gunboats book has the same top schematic and side view.  I don't have the box set of that which had nice detailed deck plans for a few ships; not sure if those included any of the not-Aphid small ships: Harpon, Ranger, Mikasa.

I've been hoping maybe there were proper three view plans, and with more surface detail than the deck schematics somewhere in the piles of books they put out.

On the plus side, there is plenty of room for artistic license!

And I think I've figured out a big part of the reason why the Aphid is so beloved and instantly recognisable whenever it appears — it's the only bleeping ship they ever illustrated in detail and from lots of different views!

Here are the small scale ones I did shortly after Ironclads & Ether Flyers came out: all the naval ships, Eagle class rocket sloops and LZ-5s for the Spanish-American campaign.  Plus a couple of ships that were in the works, 2 Harpons and 2 Gloires.  At this scale (1/2400?) just having side views and deck schematics was plenty to go by.  These were quick and cheap builds with bits of balsa/bass wood and plastic.  Flying stands in 5 lengths of Plastruct square tubing that could be swapped out as needed.

For a different plus side, according to the box sets of ships, you can make a fair number of other designs from the limited number in the boxes. Take a few good images, and cut-and-paste away!

Well, a few more of the kites and galleys, but still frustrating.

I found a small version of the image in Cloud Captains that will at least allow you to see they're SOMEWHAT better than the Ironclads and Ether Flyers ones. Not any you'd usually hear about, mind you.

If you have a Pintrest account try this;

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/jrboeke/space-1889/

or Matteen site here;

http://mateengreenway.com/steampunk/Space1889.htm

there is also a site that  promotes card models - but I can't find it. Maybe someone else knows of the link?

Good luck.

Squirmydad...

Didn't think of that.

Well, that was a resounding facepalm on my part!
