I couldn't wait, so got started on the Stormtroopers today. I figured that my hobby room is nice and cool, and house was empty because the womenfolk had gone to the pool, so plenty of time to get that squad done, right?

Wrong...

Several tutorials convinced me that Stormtroopers are 'quick and easy to paint up'. Well I call shenanigans on that!

I eventually went with Duncan Rhodes' method (over Sorastro, Spikey Bitz and some Asian-American woman who only drybrushed), although the fact that he basecoated with a light grey, and a zenithal white, where I started with a full white may have worked against me.

I compensated by doing a blueish grey wash over the white, but on second thought, I should have skipped the second layer, as I find it a tad too stark now.

I then picked out all panels with VGC Wolf Grey, leaving the wash in the recesses.
This I then highlighted with white.

The black areas were then painted with VMC German Grey, and the eyes with straight black.

And after some corrections, this is where we stand right now.

This took me over two hours, and that's not as quick as stated by those esteemed Youtubers, especially for such a near monochrome model. Also, being WotC bendies, both size and sculpting style differ from sculpt to sculpt, not to mention the often shallow detail (due to both casting limitations of the soft plastic and the oftentimes globbed on prepaint layers ::) )

But I am satisfied with the results, stark as the contrast may be.

And the process was enjoyable enough for me to stick with it for the 29 others waiting patiently for their turn. I will however not be batchpainting an entire squad this way, there is my sanity to consider after all lol

I think I might still do some highlights on the gun and hands though, and some sandy weathering to drive home the Tatooine theme. Also, I only now noticed in the picture that the base rim could do with another layer of paint... :D

Classic Stormtroopers look amazing to me. They are an iconic part of my childhood and a foundation stone on my ideas of what looks cool. But the idea of painting them given how much trouble I have painting white is more than a little daunting. I respect your dedication and commitment mate!

He’s turned out great  8)

I’m really lazy when painting stormtroopers. I just ink wash over the bendy then touch in the black and highlight with white.

Given their record on the big screen they certainly aren’t the Emperors finest so they ain’t getting a fine paint job  lol
cheers

Cheers guys :)

Up next is an Imperial officer. These guys are everywhere, so might as well give my stormtroopers someone to take orders from, eh.

Again a struggle with shallow detail (especially the face), but he'll do for a tabletopjob.

It was an interesting experience to determine the colour of the uniform, as the internet is aswarm with different takes. Official on-set pics vary wildly too, probably depending on the lighting.

In the end I just took one picture as reference and started mixing until I got close (enough).

So here he is, with his entire command:

'We're not leaving the range until you finally hit something trooper!'

Gotta feel a bit sorry for the trooper having this guy breathing down his neck all the time.
Good looking stuff. Only 29 more troopers to go?  :D

Can't wait for a nice little diorama on your table once you all tie (no pun intended)  it together.

Stromtroopers are scary (to paint, anyway!).

Incidentally, you did exactly the same modifications to your die-cast First Order speeder that I did.

Cheers all :)

Paul; it was your purchase of these speeders back in the day that got me to rush and get myself a couple as well, for just the time I would finally be doing my own SW project (which obviously is now :D ).

I like what you did to your speeder, but my effort is a tad less involved I think; I merely removed the gun and one seat (I kept the one behind the controls), while yours has a proper standing controller position like that. Also, you broke out the greenstuff to tart it up further, where I simply glued two plasticard cut-offs to the floor... lol

Great work there, mate; fits right in with your range now :)

On a side note; I will be off on a family camping trip the coming week, so no updates during that time. I had hoped to finish another stormie and the pilot, but between a birthday that had to be attended and loading up the car, I could not find the time. They'll be the first ones to be finished upon my return though :)
