JgPz IV (15mm)
« on: March 15, 2021, 02:29:26 AM »

This is a 1:100 (15mm) 3d print of a model that I remixed from a couple of others by M. Bergman and Zac Kuvalich, with a little bit of refinement on my part.

These vehicles were always intended to mount the 75mmL70, as used on the Panther, but the guns weren't available for the initial production run, so they had the 75mmL48 mounted instead. Once the L70 became available (as the JgPz IV/70), it was found that it made the vehicle overloaded and nose-heavy, and the first road wheels were replaced with steel wheels. Even so, its maneuverability was considerably impaired, contributing to its nickname of "Guderian's Duck" because of its waddling gait off-road.

Nice work!  Is the anti-aircraft Hetzer next? :D

I've never understood those AA tanks. What on earth do you need the armour for?

Good model above, not to hijack your thread entirely!

JgPz IV/70 version is done and printed.

Rather than printing a fragile resin gun barrel, I just put a socket in the mantlet and used a 2mm brass rod. It's a tad too thick for a 75mmL70 in scale, but not too egregiously so, and it will be much, much more hard-wearing this way.

Modifications to the hull for the L70 version consisted of adding a gun barrel lock on the glacis, doing away with the left front MG port cover, adding another spare wheel, and filling up the rack on the rear of the engine bay with spare track links.

The redesigned running gear has new steel wheels on the first bogies; hopefully they'll be a bit more apparent once the painting is done, as it would be a shame if all that effort were to go to waste :)

I bought one at 1/56 printed from Paint and Glue....slightly disappointed as it had too many print lines.  Didn’t look as good as this!

FDM prints will always have more surface artifacts than resin, simply due to the nature of the process. However, a good paint job will hide most of that at tabletop distances — though you do have to take the surface texture into account when painting. I still use washes a lot with FDM prints, but I generally have to go back in and over-paint any flat panels and highlights, as the texture means that washes will darken everything overall, much more than on a nice smooth injection-moulded model. I tend to paint them much more as I would if I were painting a 2d image on canvas.

That, and Etsy/eBay is full of hacks churning out mediocre prints... lol  There are some really good shops there, and some really, really bad ones.

Another cracking model with nice attention to detail with those steel rimmed wheels and the track lengths on the back of the engine deck.
I've been looking for decent 3d printed vehicles to fill the gaps in my 21st Panzer Division project. Frank of Panzer Schule showcased some resin 3d printed Somua Pak 40 halftrack from Battlefield 3D that don't seem half bad. Hoping to pick some up this month and will post images.

The JgPzIV/70 is all painted, and I've experimented with a new colour scheme, with which I am not entirely satisfied. Oh well, there's always another day.
