The Ugly Duckling Crew versus Southeast Asia
« on: October 02, 2020, 10:02:24 PM »
I'm starting up a solo Pulp Alley campaign.  It's going to link into my Weird War 2 campaign I've been playing.  As the title of the thread mentions, the campaign will take place in Southeast Asia around Borneo.

While I wait for some Pulp Alley items to arrive in the mail, I setup a game....

The Ugly Duckling crew head back to town with some much needed equipment.  With a loud bang, they thought a tire blew out on the truck.  Little did they know, the Ma Fang Ta gang had shot out the tires!

Captain Doogan and Lt. Brown, along with Sir William jump out of their car and quickly take up positions.

Ma Fang Ta himself, and a few other gang members, is waiting for them in the trees.

A member of the gang watches from some trees on the other side of the road.

Mickey the mechanic, and his niece Susie exit the truck and are ready for a fight.  Two more members of the gang are watching them very closely.

Good setting. I'm hoping to eventually set something up for South China and for French Indochina in the interwar period, perhaps with a little inspiration from Terry and the Pirates. Look forward to seeing how your campaign develops.

I would like to do something similar as well, but I have never heard of terry and the Pirates. Should I look into it?

Terry and the Pirates is a great comic strip created by Milton Caniff in 1934 and drawn by him until 1946. It's set mostly in South China. It's famous in part because of the great character "The Dragon Lady," a criminal mastermind who also resists the Japanese during WW2 out of a motivation to preserve her criminal empire. But there are also other fabulously drawn and interesting female characters. There's quite a bit of aviation in it, with some of the main characters being pilots. Here's the wiki:

Here's the wiki on comic strip artist Milton Caniff:

Here's a few images of the Terry and the Pirates comic strip:

The Milton Caniff years have been compiled into 6 volumes by the Library of American Comics, and were published between 2007 and 2009. Buy one or two of those to read the comic strip. Very entertaining, a bit of humor, airplanes, great female characters, and good inspiration for Pulp. The volumes listed here:

I did some looking at the "Terry and The Pirates" stuff this weekend.  I love listening to old radio serials and found a few for Terry.

I haven't listened to them yet, and am still looking for more out there.  I turn them on while I work and have them playing while programming.
