One day in 1860s New Zealand ...
« on: August 09, 2020, 03:42:21 AM »
Last weekend I was asked to help put on a wargaming display at an antique arms fair in a nearby town. I chose to represent the colonial New Zealand Wars of the 1860s.

This wasn’t to be an actual game, but rather a static display to show off a wide range of miniatures and terrain as an eye-catching conversation-starter to talk to the punters about our hobby.

Lots of pictures here: https://arteis.wordpress.com/2020/08/09/one-day-in-1860s-new-zealand/

Here are a few of the pics from the above link:

Indeed, the blog post is excellent reading with tons of eye candy.

You know, one should never underestimate the ability of static displays to influence young folks to join the hobby. 45 years ago I saw an AWI static display at an arts fair and I instantly feel in love. Next thing you know, I was painting little miniature soldiers and joined a wargaming club.

Well done, sir.

Superb set up and such a beautiful game  :-* :-* :-*

Collecting, modelling and playing he NZ Wars are a dream of mine for quite a few years now- ever since the Empress range appeared to be followed by the BIF for the ACW by the Perry's.

I must get around to doing it ASAP!!!

BTW, it's really weird to see people gathered around without face masks vis a vis and oft coincidental fear.

Bravo once again to NZ for dealing with the coronavirus so promptly end efficiently <3

Nice to see another kiwi posting here. This is great work. You've got the dense bush looking great there, nice range of different foliage, really setting it off!

I always enjoy seeing your stuff, fine work indeed.  It inspired me to do a mini project in 15mm.  Naturally enough I'm using your blog as a uniform guide.

Lovely stuff Roly.

Such a shame our attempt at getting 1860s Rangers and Maori never got past the post.

Brilliant set up...very NZ. I had the pleasure of visiting the Gate Pa ‘battlefield’ earlier this year. Not alot left but you get a sense of it when you look past the modernity.

NZ Wars just doesn’t get enough attention. Your efforts are appreciated.

Well done.

I visited and read your blog post - very lovely setup and I like that it was meant as an enticement versus a game.  Hope it worked.  And you have discovered my essence for workable rules - simplicity.  Somewhere this little hobby - at least in my opinion - went very wrong by getting lost in complexity.  A return to simple will make it all better methinks.  Or so is my two cents worth.
