Pontoonier Gurkhas
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:48:42 PM »
I finally finished and based my small collection of Pontoonier Miniatures Gurkhas. I will need a few more rankers for a gaming force (planning on trying colonial T&T), but I just bought one pack of each to start out with. You can see them in my LAF gallery http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=gallery;su=user;cat=197;u=520 by pack (I may have the two command packs mixed up). Here is a teaser:

As usual my poor lighting doesn't do them justice. They are beautiful sculps packed with character and cast very cleanly. I'll probably get some Brits to fight with them when I fill out the Gurkha ranks.

The Boris Mollo book only has two small color plates with Gurkhas from this period and I found out after I finished that I got a few things wrong. The leggings should be the same dark green as the uniforms instead of the black I used for starters. It is a little-known fact that the detachments sent to Kafiristan were issued black leggings though...that is my story anyway! ::)

Nice work but I would rather personally not see them until Pontoonier are readily available - believe me I have tried.

Ben emailed me just this morning and said that he had a real live professional web guy working on a site now. If it isn't up by Fall In (November IIRC) I'd be happy to take orders from LAFers and pick them up myself as long as I can still make it to the show.

Aaron,
Do I take it from your comment that Ben is going to Fall In this year?  I'll have to start my list - I picked up some of his figures at Historicon, wonderful sculpts - I want more!!!!   :-* :-* :-*

Hammers - I think they are all Paul hicks sculpts.

Sterling - They were at Fall In last year, so I just assumed they would be there this year. I mentioned in my email to Ben that I planned to buy more from him there and he didn't say he wouldn't be there, but that certainly isn't an assurance that he will. :?

Those are really nice!  What else does Pontoonier plan on releasing?

I am going to have to pick up the Gurkhas for sure! :-*

So far they have some Old West stuff (including a mariachi band!) and the colonials. The colonials are all for the third Anglo-Burma war (circa 1875) and include Brits (with and without mustaches and in glengarry). I think Indian troops are either new or soon to be released. Sorry not to be more specific, but my catalogue is at home.

So far every colonial range seems to consist of five packs of four figures each broken down into two variant command packs (with officers, NCOs, and musicians) and one each of other ranks skirmishing, advancing, and charging.

I believe they were sculpted before Paul started sculpting for them. IMO they are not to the same standard, but where else are you going to find a band to play the cantina at such short notice?  ;D

The band? Not that I know of. I should have picked up a set for myself, but somehow I resisted.

Shame  :( Would have loved to see them. I might like a set for a small diorama.
