Which shade of German feldgrau do You settle for?
« on: August 24, 2020, 01:07:25 AM »
There is the greenish tinted variant and the one in a  plain grey shade. I prefer the former, what about You?
Due to the variety of shades of feldgrau do You mix them?

I sometimes lean toward one shade, only to find myself looking at period photos or illustrations, to see a vague mix at times. It's often the same I find with fieldgrey in a WW2 setting as well. There was quite a good shot by someone back on a similar topic with all the various shades shown on a piece of cloth each.

Generally, I try to appeal to both sides and paint a few figures in shade A, only to paint some in shade B to get a good variation.

Unless of course you are going for unit cohesion, in that case sticking to one pattern might also work out. Suppose it's down to personal preference really.

I paint my Germans both ways. I do that just so it doesn't get too monotonous.
Maybe not as green as in example A. That could be the uniform colour for the jäger.
Old photo documents are not necessarily the best reference for the uniform colors.
Well painted Minis Gribb. Hope for more. Maybe I should paint again sometime.  :)

Bavarians had green uniforms similar to the jägers that they kept even when the new uniform and helm was introduced, the rest wore greys.

And before "oh, but all the different fabrics and dyes, etc." - do whatever you want, then.

Not so great on shades but I found these plates from a book on the German e-bay site a while back:

Thank you for the very detailed presentation which shows us everything about shoulderstraps and insignia in the field-grey German army.  I think the field grey of the uniforms in WW1 varied a lot. From the field blouses M1914 to the simple field skirt M1916. And then there were the different German states, Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria etc. .  In the illustrations the protective covers of the helmets are also shown in grey.
As far as I know there were also the most different variants, from khaki beige to grey-green.
I agree with zirrian, here you can't go wrong with the field grey.

If you look at colour photos of modern reenactors and black & white photos of German soldiers taken back when then you will see variations in the tunics, even within the same Gruppe.

I like late war (1916 on), by which point you can have a mix of different styles of tunic (and in different shades, given the vagaries of the bad dyes used late in the war) even in one unit.

So true, same can be said for early war as well.  I have a picture somewhere of a bunch of WWI German tunics that spanned the war; I took the pic at a museum, they were all lined up - no two matched.  The only pic I could quickly find online is below; it is WWII, yet it was just like it in re variations.  What exactly IS 'Feldgrau' is often debated.
