One Hour Wargames with my wife
« on: September 16, 2020, 04:00:13 PM »
We plan on holing up in Maine for the winter. My wife offered to learn how to play a simple game. I thought One Hour Wargames simpler than DBA and we played the first scenario last night. I started with a piecemeal attack. My dice heated up and it looked like I might win anyway, but at the end she had a cavalry and an infantry unit left facng my lone artillery unit left. I threw in the towel. She allowed she could play it again.  :)  We also have dominoes, yahtzee and other board games. And Netflix.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Enjoy fella.  Been playing a lot of OHW with the multiple D6  Amendments, suggested by cleverer folk than me, over lockdown and enjoy the subtleties over the various periods we have tried.  Not for the barrack room lawyers and the men of minute detail but I think they offer a similar result without the blood sweat and tears.  Revolutionised my Wargame outlook but they do need a willing partner!  Keep rolling high!

Any of the Dan Mersy skirmish games published by Osprey would be a good alternative.

One Hour Horse and Musket will be it. I'll pack enough Seven Years War Prussians and Austrians to play that. No more little guys in the car.

Indeed. Never introduce a new player - especially one's wife - by trouncing them. Bad idea.  ;)

I've been cogitating on a 'tickle' for the Napoleonic rules for Horse Artillery...
Get them into 12" range of the enemy and let fly with a 'whiff of grapeshot'. Not sure whether to us a straight D6 to hit, like musketry, or keep the -2 penalty, roll 2 D6 and keep the bestest?

Ah well, we are only doing Frederick vs. Maria Theresa, so horse artillery isn't an issue. OK, Freddy did have a single battery...

Edit: and the terrain in Maine will be highly abstract, maybe just pieces of cardboard from deliveries.

only? It's my favourite match-up!
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Sounds great, with OHWs it's getting stuck in that counts. If you don't mess about too much with Neil's KISS Principle, some of the scenarios can get very tense as the 15 move clock winds down!

And mine, just that no other figures are making the trip north.

Yeah Harry, no bells and whistles will be put on Neil's work. 36 scenarios is enough.

I'm a big fan and plan to play all the scenarios, in order, as a campaign. It'll be solo using the 'chance/event cards' as live players turn their noses up when they see the figures I shall use!
