Dipping a toe into the weird war
« on: September 20, 2020, 07:56:48 PM »
So finally managed to get a passable result painting up some ww2 minis from warlord.
Don't know why but just couldn't translate from sci fi and fantasy over to historical, never seemed right and always looked a bit odd (British airborne I'm looking at you)

Cobbled together  some suitable walls from the last of my blue Styrofoam thinking of a mansion and a ad hoc force of American and British discovering the dastardly goings on inside.
First up paranormal advisor and first of the GO's plus some 'experiments'
For use as target practise.
Cheers all

Looks like your off to a good start.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Wow!  Those guys look awesome.  I have some of the Frostgrave zombies.  I'll have to throw them into my mix too.

What ruleset are you looking at using?

Was thinking of destruction testing my own rules seen elsewhere.
Or using pulp alley lots of goodies in there.
Any suggestions?

Pulp Alley is a really good choice. You can use it for anything from stone age to futuristic sci-fi. You can range anywhere from totally historical to totally fantastical, and Pulp Alley seamlessly integrates historical and fantastical elements in one robust system.

I say its robust because you can bend and twist the rules without breaking them. The engine of opposed dice throws of multiple d6, d8, d10, and d12 can accommodate a wide range of different character abilities. A "league" can range from a single epic character to many figures using gangs and gun or vehicle crews, so you can make it look as military as you want it to look. The cards add some nice twists of fate or challenges, but you can deemphasize them by limiting the number of cards that players can hold in their hands.
Sailors have more fun!

Have you looked at Strange Aeons?
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

I have used Strange Aeons for a 40K based game, and enjoy the campaign a lot.  Here is my review....

https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2019/04/battle-report-operation-hemlock-strange.html

I have also played Pulp Alley and find that system very versatile.  I would recommend getting the deck at the same time as the rules!  However, they are a versatile set.

Finally, I have seen two sets of solo-play rules with a positive buzz.  however, i do not have personal experience with them.  They are Perilous Tales and Nightwatch.  They are co-op/solo and I have read some positive things, but I do not have a personal review of them.

I hope that helps you with getting started on your journey!
