Deciding base size for Wars of the Roses
« on: September 23, 2020, 11:40:54 AM »
I am starting my Wars of the Roses armies and have been wondering how to base .... I still am, but have stepped out and based 2 units on 80mm frontages, which is traditionally small for 28mm, but the smaller footprint is friendlier to my smaller table.

I have blogged an article around the initial two units with some pics. LINK

They look really good! The spacing seems just right.

I'm in favour of have models closely packed in. It generally looks better, and has the advantage of getting more models into a small area.

Lets see some more!

I've left a slightly longer reply on your blog.

I think that you have found a really nice balance between number the of mini's and size of base ratio so if you're happy with what you have; then go for it, it looks great  8)

If you are still undecided about base frontages, maybe go for individually based figures on movement trays...that way you can change the base size/frontage according to what rules you use?

Thanks all.  I like the packed look and two bill units side by side should look quite good also. I think this will work for me, though I suspect as Akula says, many people coming to the period will likely be tempted by single figure basing, if for no other reason than the recent Never mind the Billhooks rules use it.

They look great, and the 80mm bases will work fine for Sword & Spear, either as one base of figures as one unit or if you want a lot of figures on the table, two bases as one unit.

Thanks, it was actually your excellent Sword & Spear rules that first got me seriously looking at the 80mm idea and so I am squeezing the Never mind the Billhooks to fit. :-)

I use a 40mm x 40mm base on which I mount 3 figures, arranged randomly.  When formed up two bases deep, they give a good visual appeal of a mass of men, but not looking too uniformed.

I've used all sorts in my time. From 40mm x 40mm (For WAB) to 120mm x 60mm (Impetus) to 60mm x 60mm (I decided to go with what I wanted at the time) and now (no photos as they are being rebased as I type) 40mm frontage by 60mm deep.

40mm x 40mm for WAB V.2:

120mm x 60mm for Impetus:

60mm x 60mm Pour moi:
