RAF Ground force Crete 28mm?
« on: October 05, 2020, 10:46:51 PM »
Hello,
Does anyone produce RAF infantry miniatures? I saw a unit of RAF utilized as infantry in a Battle of Crete wargame.

Here is the site:

James Mortis who put on the Crete game is a member of this forum.
If I remember correctly he converted the RAF troops using Airfix 1/48 plastic ground crew miniatures.

James put below on Partizan Show facebook page...

"I've done some quick conversions to make armed RAF ground crew and a pilot (slightly optimistically still wearing his flying helmet 😀). As they're mostly Artizan Eighth Army with head swaps, they're probably over-equipped for Crete, and ideally they should have obsolete Ross rifles, not Lee Enfields, but time was pressing and I think they add a bit of colour to the game!"

Below is the link with some more pictures of the figures

Sorry, got to this thread late but thanks for finding the link to my original pics! (I did have a thread on the LAF Ww2 forum but the search engine appears to be broken).  As has been said, they were nothing fancy - I bought the Airfix 1/48 RAF ground crew kit mostly for the trollies, then discovered that I could just about get away with using the heads on the chunky Artizan bodies (don’t try this with Perry plastics!)  A few blue shirts in the painting phase did the rest.

Those conversions are great. :-* :-*

I was going to sugest using home guard figures either foundry or warlord and paint them as RAF.

Well given the RAF only had 3 Gloucester Gladiators for air defense of the entire island of Crete, I am not sure how many ground personnel were lurking about.

Their participation in the defence is mentioned in most sources and the RAF museum says they "distinguished themselves"

I think we only had about eight models on the table though.

Probably not that helpful if your in rush.( As theyre either off for casting or still only half finished.)
I've RAF on the way .I could only find pictures of the armoured forward observer's set.
But there's a down pilot set ,ground crew, and several infantry packs that'll work as RAF regiment. As Home service and regment kit is very similar.
There's also a tilly with a bren gunner in short/ rolled up sleeves.  A Morris CS8 1934 version and the earlier 1930's Morris model R. Also a separate Motley mount with Lewis, or Bren, options.

I know he is not, but when I first looked I thought the guy standing in the Carrier was holding a 99 ice cream cone.
