We used to use boardgames (Imperium for Sci-fi, War of the Ring for Middle-earth/fantasy games, Sport of Kings for most blackpowder games, and Wolfe and Montcalme for games set in North America) for background story telling and so on, but as our games developed we made up our own boards, rules, counters and games to represent our armies (and PCs) and their movements. Home-brew allows one to get closer to your own style of tabletop play.

thankyou. I figured I'd have to modify how the board games are played to meet my needs but was hoping to use them as a foundation. Seems like you have pretty good success doing just that.

I like to play and have organised campaigns on grand strategic level, then when a battle is joined we take it to the tabletop.

I have used this for 7YW, Napoleonic and ww2 and about to start a modern Scandinavian campaign in February.

Cheers
Matt
