Last Stand on Opium Hill CoC campaign
« on: October 17, 2020, 03:00:24 AM »
We kicked off a new campaign this week - Last Stand on Opium Hill. It's a four map campaign based in Singapore in 1942 written specifically for Chain of Command by Mark Backhouse and published in Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy magazine (issue 101). This gives me a chance to use my recently painted Far East tropical British platoon for the early part of the war and get geared up for the forthcoming Far East Handbook for CoC.

It's a classic backs-to-the-wall defence for the Malaya Regiment as they try to hold back the Japanese tide in the closing stages of the Malaya campaign.

Here's the AAR for the first game http://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2020/10/last-stand-on-opium-hill-scenario-1.html

As always enjoyed your blow by blow battle report immensely. You make us see the interesting small unit tactical  problems.  Very bad news for the British, can't wait to see the next instalment.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Thanks. I try to write the sort of reports that I’d like to read. I like to follow how players try to solve the tactical problems, it seems to me that is at the centre of any game and what drives it. I find it frustrating reading AARs if I can’t quite follow what’s happening, because I care a lot less about who wins or loses than I do about understanding how they won or lost.

The campaign continues and the Japanese push on towards Singapore. We reach the small village of Buena Vista where the Malay Regiment will conduct a delaying action to try to stall the advance. Thanks everyone, glad you are enjoying following these. While they are a bit of work to put together it’s almost like playing the game again and in the end very enjoyable.

Yes, keen to give that one a try too, although I’m not sure Dave is quite as enthusiastic, he didn’t enjoy being ground down as the Russians in the first one, so we may have to swap sides for Part 2.

The Japanese continue their drive on Singapore but now reach a tough defensive position held by the Malay Regiment for scenario 3. Is this where their offensive will stall, or can they push on through? Another gripping game in what is turning into a very enjoyable campaign, the full AAR is here: http://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2020/11/last-stand-on-opium-hill-scenario-3.html

Love the reports. As always, your reports are the next best thing to actually getting to play them myself.
