Union colonel who ran away at Shiloh
« on: October 21, 2020, 01:28:21 AM »
I'm hunkered down in Maine, away from my books. I know that a colonel of a green Union regiment at Shiloh got off his horse, laid down behind a log as Confederates advanced on his regiment. As skirmish fire turned into battle line firing he leaped up, yelled "save yourselves!" and ran off. His green troops followed his example. I think this was one of Prentiss' regiments but cannot check. Would one of you kind souls tell me what regiment this was? Thanks in advance.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Looks like it was the 53rd Ohio Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Appler. He was able to rally the Regiment to hold on for another hour after he regained his nerve. Then lost it again. Last battle he fought in I believe.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Ah, thank you. It was in Hildebrand's brigade, Sherman's Division. The Wikipedia OB notes Lt. Col. Fulton in command after Appler. I suspect it was he who rallied the troops. Appler resigned later that month.

Probably, shiloh isn't my history focus. But I saw your question and figured I'd look it up.

Yeah, but this guy was the most egregious, what with hiding behind a log and all.
