Anyone Using “Mutants And Death Ray Guns” For Space SCI-FI?
« on: October 21, 2020, 05:32:01 PM »
Sci-Fi as in spaceship crews and various Alien species instead of Post-Apocalyptic Mutants?

Anyone used the rule set for non-PA SF settings, such as on board thriving (or derelict) spaceships and stations, on other planets, etc.?  How did it go in those instances?  Was it a fun game?

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

By the way, here are some video reviews of “Mutants And Death Ray Guns”, which is a rule set by the author of “Song Of Blades And Heroes”:

Thanks

I am doing so right now. I am preparing a game for the group that will be set on an abandoned space ship with a value cargo.
The players will be various space races/groups/aliens that have a limited time to find what is valuable and get off the ship before
it breaks apart. I will be using MDRG. I purchased the rules to use as SF rules. Having read them I think they will work fine for
space adventures.

Our group used to use it somewhat often for weeknight games when time was an issue. The games were always fun. We’ve used it for a number of different settings. Adapting the rules worked well enough :)

It's a great game. We don't usually use it for post-apocalyptic games but just for generic sci-fi (we disregard jamming power armour, etc., for that - though it's a great wee rule in its own right).

The Simian X supplement is worth getting in PDF as it has quite a few more "generic sci-fi" additions.

We find that it works best when warband numbers are kept fairly low - certainly well below 10.

It's also good with wandering monsters/aliens. What we do is stat up our six grisliest aliens or rogue robots and then roll a d6 at the end of the turn. A 6 means that a monster enters from a random table-edge or other spawn point. The monsters always activate on three dice after the players' turn (each monster counts as a separate player if there's more than one) and attack the nearest models. But you could give each a 'mission' to follow if and when it enters the table ("retrieve artifact X"; "harvest the organs of humans only"; "prevent lifeforms from escaping", etc.).

I guess I’ll try to get my hands on one.

Thanks so much!

EDIT
Is this the one?

Yup - that's the one. You can get it as a PDF on the Ganesha Games site.

PS.  Does anyone know if the PDF version allows copy paste of text, to make your character sheets and such?  Or is it read-only?

Hi Dan,
I've got the PDF from Wargames Vault and the charater sheet is not fillable (or I'm being thick). Interesting set of rules which I will give a run sometime soonish - a few things in the queue before it: FUBAR 5th ed, Planet 28 and Five Parsecs.

Here's tonight's effort (FUBAR 4th) with the Apes in Space charging along the gantry to assault the watchtower defended by a lone dude in a powered suit.

Those Apes in Space figures look awesome!

About the pdf file, it looks like this fellow was able to extract text for his character sheets somehow:

I sure hope he didn’t have to retype all of that verbiage himself onto the individual sheets.

Hi Dan. Foxit PDF reader lets you add text in a pdf. I have used it for my character cards adding pictures and text to my Wiley Games Galactic Heroes scifi rule set. The also have Bigger Battles that allow you to play larger games. I am a huge fan of Fistful of Lead and all of the Wiley Games rule sets. you can buy a  hard copy and or a pdf. he also has a Black Friday sale going on all products.
