In the (3mm) jungle...
« on: October 31, 2020, 12:16:08 AM »
For some reason that I can't quite remember I got some 3mm figures to try. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, Rommel if there's ever a Far East version or possibly Nuts Big Battles. Bases are 50mm x 30mm, which at 1/600 is a pretty large area for base decoration purposes. I had a go at recreating some photos and Osprey pics, as well as some tree-heavy bases.

Bases with trees, and a prototype house on stilts made from balsa and card. Might try some Monopoly houses next...

:o This looks rather splendid! Not sure though if those big areas of moving terrain might break immersion in a game. As someone who does primarily paint and collect myself I'd totally go down your route though  :D

Great work on those.

What extras where you thinking Rommel needs for the Far East?

Cheers.

I think I remember Sam saying you'd need extra terrain rules for jungle, but primarily you'd need the relevant Command Posts, or at least a Japanese one.

CP are key aren’t they - I couldn’t recall if some had been done as downloads

I think someone had done some work on a Far East mod for Rommel on the old Honour Games forum. But no idea where that is now.

There was a good discussion about it with many ideas for Pacific CPs  on the old forum.  Sadly it was lost when Sam decided only Facebook users should be allowed to discuss his games.

From memory the CPs were the "easy" part of the conversion. Scenery rules that still allowed a flowing (and fun) game were much more difficult.  Beach assaults and opposed landings seemed relatively achievable but once conflicts moved inland, the scenery became (appropriately for the campaigns) a real obstacle.

Yeah, the Honour forum was good. The FB group was supposed to be an interim measure, but it's nowhere near as useful as a forum.

I think I'm going to do groups of 3 50mm x 30mm bases that fit together, giving a large coherent area of terrain to represent. This gives a scale 50-60m frontage and 30-36m depth to work with. First go is expanding the 'troops moving along the riverbank' base:

Some more additions to the 3mm project.

First 14th Army bases:

River crossing IJA bases inspired by Osprey art:

Those 2 infantry bases form a triad with another base:

A village base. Houses are mostly scratchbuilt, with some Monopoly houses as well

Two pieces of 'scatter' terrain.

Rubber plantation:

Coconut plantation:

Bamboo 'forests:'

And some more IJA bases. Paratroopers at the back  :)
