BEF Uniform painting guide by Aircav
« on: August 20, 2009, 07:02:52 AM »
Here's my BEF guide.

I use the following basic recipe for BEF:
Uniform: Basecoat of Vallejo leather brown, Vallejo english uniform & add vallejo Khaki to English uniform to highlight.
Webbing: base English uniform, add Khaki as above, then final highlight of pure Khaki.
Helmets: can be either green, brown, Khaki Drab or grey.
Helmet covers: Base leather brown, drybrush khaki, drybrush beige.
Wood: Vallejo Hull red, dark fleshtone, skaven brown
Leather jerkins: base of Citadel bestial brown & dark flesh mix, highlight with bestial brown, Final highlight of Bestial brown & Vallejo orange brown mix.
Officers Tan Leather: All Vallejo - Mahogany Brown base, highlight with Red Leather, then panzer aces light rust final highlight of Orange Brown (Thanks to Mark from Over Open Sights for steering me in the right direction to make the recipe)

Any advice out there for painting cavalry?
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

I did a lot of research in recipes, and I'm painting a test figure in Foundry colors right now.  I bought some of the suggested Vallejo colors too and I have a pile of GW paints.  I'll try to post a picture of my sample Canadian when I get it done.

Thanks for the advice.

Keith, I am painting 1914 British infantry, are the uniform and equipment colors the same as these or would you use different shades?

My Cadian in Canadian colors didn't come out too well.  I used mostly Foundry colors augmented by GW of course.  I used triads 5, 90, 100, 12 this was someone elses recommendations.  I like the English Uniform and Flesh Triads, triads 100 and 5.  I want and I guess need based Osprey and other sources yellower Khaki.  I plan to try some Vallejo paint, possibly your exact ones, along with some of the GW paint I own.

Here is the sample test miniature I did, it wasn't meant to be exact, more like an excuse to try out all the Foundry Triads.

Bigger pics can be seen on my Flickr account or on my blog.

Muskie, Try using GW Graveyard Earth, highlight by adding GW Desert yellow or maybe tausept ochre for a more yellow Khaki

I got both those pots, well maybe not the Tau Sept one I have Iyandan Darksun.  Some of their names are just getting too complicated.  Snot Green that's a color.  Anyway I'm working on my terrain and I'm painting someone's sleeping bag or something a more yellow color.  I did one plaguemarine wearing a hood and I think it was just one color and washes to get a nice looking final result.  I should really write down my recipes, I kinda do, through blogging, but somethings especially things I painted years ago...

Anyway here is the fig in question, not yellow but certainly not Foundry Khaki.  I have the Vallejo Khaki you recommended.  I looked for a lot of suggestions and ordered the paint and even some Foundry Riflemen to practice on, but I decided to practice on GW figs as I have many and I needed a guardsmen to test my trenches.

Forgot I could do inline pictures here, the Miniatures Page really needs to update to the 2000's.  ;-)

Hi,

One of my next project is some 1914 BEF.

Have you any idea, which GW paints are suitable for the khaki, puttees and webbing?

Cheers
