Have at it, have at it now!!!
« on: November 18, 2020, 03:32:05 PM »
Here's a question for the Brethren to scratch their heads over...
Are we modelers or wargamers?
These august halls are filled with wonderful tales of our 'projects', both long and short term that fill our lives. What happens, if and when they reach the fields of glory?
Which comes first, the chicken or egg thingy?

???  ::)  ???
"Wot did you do in the war Grandad?"

"I was with Harry... At The Bridge!"

We had this discussion years ago.
The consensus was you were either:-
Someone who likes painting & making.
(this type will go for simple 'pew pew' rules to use the  pretty toys) i.e. Modelers
OR
Someone who will force themselves to paint & make, maybe even pay someone
else to produce the 'Toys' so that they can concentrate on the game. i.e. Wargamers.

Thankfully there is room for both & I feel lucky to count both types among my friends.

There are times that I like to paint but mainly I want to play.
I would say I am a wargamer. If painted figures were more common
and easy to get I would be buying most of my figures painted rather than paint
them myself. I paint my figures to get them done. Just don't want to put the
time in to make them works of art.

We had this discussion years ago.

We have this discussion repeatedly. Not sure why to be honest ::)
Perhaps we should just make it a sticky, then people wouldn’t have to keep asking the same question...

could we have a general, "same old discussion" sticky list?

then we could refer to it, and check if we had discussed whatever it is/was?

We could refer others to it, like new members or old ones like me, that don't remember the previous discussions clearly anymore, or if they actually read it or answered,  and what the answers are/where, maybe link to search function :D

What was the question? Both?
Although I do enjoy revisiting things and discussions, as the answers do change and vary and why not.
and more importanter,
What am I having for tea? I know I have discussed that somewhen before somewhere with at least someone or some more.. but the answer keeps changing, daily.

Its been such a long day.

The question is a little different in the slant Harry has asked for.  At the end of a project with no possibility to game it any more do you:

A - Get rid of all the models as you have no further use for them (ebay here we come)

Or

B - Keep them perhaps even in a display cabinet.

If A then you are a gamer if B then you are firmly in the modeler camp.

I presume this is somewhat linked to his moving away from his old gaming group and having little opportunity/desire to hook up with another bunch of old farts.

My "at it" :
Wargaming is not different than modeling, wargaming is modeling.

Bits of metal and plastic and cardstock and resin and all the rest, and the glues and paints and knives and brushes used on them, model the things.

Putting them on a table and using rules (however detailed or vague they may be) to move them around and engage each other, model the events.
