28mm Medieval Church Recommendations Please
« on: November 22, 2020, 02:24:31 PM »
Hello all. I can no longer put off investing the money or time in a church. I’d like something without a steeple. Just a good version of your bog standard Norman parish place of worship and quiet prayer please. I’d probably prefer resin to MDF if possible but open to suggestions. I can’t afford/justify Grand Manner sadly, so I was looking at this from Magister Militum - which looks like resin - or at least less precise and perfect than MDF. Thoughts on this? Other suggestions? Budget is about £40-£50.

Looks like an old Ian Weekley model so it will be quality.

The only thing I would say is that I bought a castle/city wall and the resin, which was of good quality was solid and very heavy- I had to carry it from Vapnartak to York train station! It nearly cost me my back lol

Not resin but I am considering getting the Sarissa Saxon/Norman church, price £20, but there is a Black Friday deal to get a 20% discount at present, code is Black2020.

I got this church from the last ever Sheffield Triples show. If memory serves, thirty quid ready painted...

Hoka Hey produce a basic MdF medieval church for £16.  Would probably need extra detailing but not bad value.  I have the old Gallia church, but I think Gallia are long gone....

I think 1st Corps have a nice one. I have some of their resin terrain and it is really nice quality.

I have the Sarissa mdf Norman church.  It looks good if you add brickwork and tiles or render the walls.  I spent April cutting and gluing on card tiles and bricks in between online teaching.

If i were you I would go to the expense of buying Grand Manner (see links below).

Grand Manner simply cannot be beaten for quality and craftsmanship. Nothing comes close for historical resins IMHO.

 Budget is about £40-£50.

Think you missed the bit about budgets Atheling, Grand Manner is 5 to 10 times more expensive than the budget.

lol Apologies, so I did  lol

I think it unlikely that you are going to be able to buy a high quality resin church for a £40-£50 budget. 1st Corp do one but it is definitely from an earlier date than that of a Norman church. If you are happy on settling for an Anglo Saxon church then the 1st Corp model would be fine. However, the Normans tore down nearly all the Anglo Saxon churches and built motte and baileys, even just for market space.....

lol Grand Manner = the best - no question of that. But at that price...... 'taint happening. So I suppose I'm trying to find something that can be made to look good - either with a lick of paint - or at least minimum modelling effort. It can be MDF - just so long as it's not so perfect-looking or lego-like that I have to spend hours and hours on it - at which point I may as well just scratchbuild and be done with it. Difficult balance I know. I might go with the Magister Militum one. It's intriguing to look at, and looks like a good painting will do the job!

Winston, one thing to think about is the size. I believe the Magister Militum buildings are the old Ian Weekley range that date back to the ‘80s or early ‘90s. They may have been aimed at 25mm figures and if so it might not look right with newer ranges. Worth checking.

They are but they are fine for 28mm. I've got quite a few models from the old Ian Weekely ranges. I'll try to pop up a picture ASAP.

I think Footsore are going to do a Norman Church as part of the next Baron's War kickstarter.  Of course you would have to wait quite a while.

By the way Gripping Beast produce a resin church for £25. Probably more Anglo-Saxon than Norman/Medieval but would probably pass muster as a rural church or chapel.
