Painting muscles
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:37:50 AM »
Hi

I'm always totally in the dark when painting naked arms and legs that aren't sculpted with muscles defined, in the sense of where to put shades and highlights.

Do you guys use some reference when painting such subjects, or what (pics, larger minis..)?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

i use reference material all the time - from other folks painted mini's to photos and magazines - even "real life".  when painting a female gladiators from West Wind i could claim: "No Ma'am im not staring at your legs, i'm doing research"  :mrgreen:

Good topic! Can somebody please point me to which Vallejo colours he's using for the skin? I have Flat-, Medium- and Dark Flesh but somehow it never looks satisfying to me.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

@ The Prof: Thanks! I took the liberty to download a bunch of your pics of barbarians as well. Lots of exposed flesh.

Now I have sufficient material for the male figure... now, does anyone have a site (or a link to a site) with lots of painted scantily clad females? Miniatures, I mean...  :wink:

There is plenty of high quality painting of bare skin at the Jenova Project:

There is more basic painting of bare skin at the Shadow Forge and Bronze Age Miniatures websites.

@Johan:
The skin tone article willl probably be of interest, when I have gotten the grips on WHERE to put them, but interesting none the less  :)

@warrenbruhn:
