Book advice about Uesugi Kenshin?
« on: December 02, 2020, 12:38:42 PM »
Hi!

First I choose the Uesugi clan only because of the easy sashimono and nobori, red and red dot on blue. But now I'm really interested in lol . Can anybody advice me on a book about the Uesugi and Uesugi Kenshin.

Cheers

Hello,

Not that much available outside of Japanese publications.
There is a dissertation with the title

Uesugi Kenshin: a study of the military career of a sixteenths century  warlors (Dennis Darling)

Which should be available for free online.
Will try to check my stuff later, if something else pops up.

The Osprey Essential History War in Japan is a good (and cheap) general overview of the period and the protagonists.

Hi Wellington,

Nagao Kagetora/Uesugi Kenshin is one of my favorite historical figures. To learn more about him, the following web site might be a good place to start: https://www.samurai-archives.com/kenshin.html

For books with more information, see the list of sources at the bottom of the above site page.

Here are some pics of the various banners used by Uesugi Kenshin, his generals and soldiers:

Best of luck with your research!

Cheers,
Scott
