Hi guys...

I was seeing today "All quiet in the western front" with my wife, and she asked "why do they wear that spike in the helmet?"

Gosh! I had no good answer for that!

Was it merely decorative or has any useful funcion?

Thanks!

AFAIK, it was originally introduced in the 19th century to deflect sword slashes from the crown of the head. In 1914, it merely was retained for tradition, and rather quickly removed - you would be hard-pressed to find Pickelhauben after, say, late 1915.

It was so Gert Fröbe could burst his balloon with one, to comic effect in "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines."

No other reason. :)

I tried to get a replica one on eBay the other day (it's high time we all wore silly hats in our games). It went for stupid money and even then the reserve wasn't met. I've seen real ones go for less! Grrr...
