Flintloque purchasing advice
« on: December 25, 2020, 06:06:16 PM »
As part of my planning for the new year I am starting to plan a Flintloque purchase. Just a small set of figures to be able to try out the game and see if I want to expand into larger games perhaps using Sharp Practice.

I was thinking of getting the Bier and Bones book since I really want to build a force of the Dogman kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg.

If I wanted to use the Elves or Orcs in my game I am correct that I would need the War in Catalucia book?

I am going to buy some Line troops and some Light Infantry. Am I going to want to get an Officer and a colour bearer and musician as well?

And what is a good number of troops to get a good game? I know there is a starter set with ten models but that seems a bit small to me

I can't answer the first couple of questions you have. As for how many figures.
It depends on what you want to do. Flintloque is a skirmish game. You can do it
with a small amount of figures even as few as say 8-10 total. It will likely allow you
to play with as many as 24 figures or so (for two players) before it starts getting a little hard to do. For this size
you would not need an officer or standard bearer unless you would want one. Slaughterloo
is for unit based battles. Usually infantry units are 24 figures and cavalry smaller. Here you
would want an officer ect. Not sure but the books you mentions I believe are supplements
so you may have to get the Flintloque or Slaughterloo rulebooks.

I can say it is a great game and the rules are easy to use. It can get addictive as there are so many cool figures to buy.

How is the game if one adds cavalry to one or both sides?

For the Flintloque skirmish game it would work just fine.
I have seen scenarios that have a mix of infantry and cavalry.
For Slaughterloo cavalry would definitely make up part of your force.

Have you thought about joining the RETROLOQUE Group on Facebook?

A growing group of like minded Flintloque/Slaugtherloo gamer's who would be able to offer advice.

Personaly I just bought the dark Tzar beginner set. FIgures are nice, the system looks good, even if I didn't try a game so far.

You can download the starter rules in the dark Tsar set for a couple of quid.

The basic rules/points/stats for most of the species can be had for free, it's the more detailed rules that are in the books. So you can try out the different sides before committing to the books. B&B is, as you say, the central Europe powers. Dwarfs, dogmen, rabbitmen &c. Catalucia is the Orcs/Goblins/Elves, Deadloque is the Undead/Elves. The 4th book "Grapeshotte" is about artillery & specialist units.

Each of the first 3 books has the rules system in it and so can be used standalone.

(I don't know much about Slaughterloo. Sorry.)

We have found that FL forces of around 300 points make a reasonable game. We can play 2-on-2 with those in a club evening if people are experienced or learner games of 300 a side.

300 points gets you around 6-12 figures (I did manage to get 15 in there for my Dwarf militia who are low quality & hence low price.) I do tend to include an officer, a standard or a musician in those groups for the variety and so it's at least structured like a proper unit. You can also include a mix of skill levels and character traits. Most of the FL range comes in "unit packs" which make a good basis for these units.

The starter set has 6 orcs and 10 elves in it, and will give you two about-300pt forces; and they're nice figures. The "shilling starter" packs include character sheets, miniatures and scenarios.

If you're interested in seeing other examples of units, I have a huge PDF of my units that would give you an idea of the sizes of things. https://www.fysh.org/~katie/wargames/downloads/flintloque3/
