Prussians 1815 campaign
« on: January 08, 2021, 08:34:10 AM »
Hi I am restarting an 1815 project in 5mm adler figures and would like to see if anyone can confirm the following information I found on the http://www.napolun.com/mirror/napoleonistyka.atspace.com/Prussian_infantry.htm web site.

It is in regards to flags carried. I am using a figure ratio of 1/60 so will not use two flags per battalion. My idea is to use the Leib flag for 1st battalion then Retirierfahne for the 2nd battalion. I am pretty sure the fusilier battalion did not carry any flags.

Now to the information in the above web site. It states "1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th (Leib), 9th, 10, 11th and 12th Infantry Regiment.
These were the 12 'old' regiments, solid, well trained and well dressed. Only these regiments carried flags."

Can anyone confirm this that only these regiments carried flags?
Thanks

Only the 1st to 11th Regiments carried flags, as well as the six grenadier battalions (which had converted to Grenadier Regiments in 1815) and the two Guards regiments.

The 1st and 2nd Battalions of each regiment only carried two flags per battalion until mid-1813, when it was reduced to one flag per battalion.  Typically yes, the 1st Battalion carried the regimental Leibfahne and the 2nd Battalion carried one of the Retirierfahnen and the Fusilier Battalion had no flag.  However, the Colberg Regiment donated its 1st Battalion and Leibfahne to the newly-created 2nd Guards Regiment in mid-1813, so I think that the newly-created replacement 1st Battalion of the Colberg Regt carried a Retirierfahne after that date, though I'd have to check on that.

The 12th Regt (Brandenburg Regt), while theoretically an 'old' line regiment was actually only raised in mid-1813 when the 1st Guards (which had been the 8th Regt) were taken out of the line numbering system.  The former 9th to 12th Regts were then re-numbered, becoming 8th to 11th and the new 12th (Brandenburg) Regt was created.  Consequently it spent much of its wartime career dressed in 'Ersatz' rags and didn't carry any flags.  I don't know why they didn't just give them one of the spare Retirierfahnen, as had happened with the grenadier battalions.

One other thing I forgot earlier: The 10th (1st Silesian) Regt lost both its flags in 1814 and they weren't replaced until after Waterloo.  I don't think any other flags had been lost prior to 1815.

As for Landwehr: A lot of Landwehr units had unofficial flags when they were raised in 1813, but they were formally ordered to stop carrying them later that same year (October 1813 iirc). It's speculated that some may have continued to carry flags, but that's pure guesswork.

Similarly, the 12th (Brandenburg) Regt, the 12 Reserve Regts, the Elbe Regt and all the other various contingents that became the 13th+ Regts may have carried unofficial flags at various times, but I can't think of any examples.

However my Prussians defy regulations and all carry some sort of flag, one per battalion.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
