Flexible roads and rivers made from decorating caulk
« on: January 12, 2021, 05:01:31 PM »
Inspired by Jaye Wiley’s advice over in the fantasy forum, I had a go with constructing flexible roads and rivers with decorating caulk. I purchased a brown caulk and gun from Amazon, and squeezed blobs out onto greaseproof paper.
Wearing gloves, I smoothed the caulk out flat into the desired lengths and shapes for road and river sections, then sprinkled some play sand on top and worked it into the surface.
After a few hours drying I peeled the sections off and flipped them to allow the rear side to dry.
After drying I painted and dry brushed as desired.
Very cheap and easy to do! The sand sticks really well after you shake the excess off, and the pieces are heavy enough to lay flat and not shift around during play.

Could I suggest a bit more dry brushing of a paler colour? They look like very muddy roads at the minute (which might be the intention)

And for the rivers trimming the short edges, so that they can join up will look better too.

These look great. I have done something similar (as has my brother). One trick for making the texture on them is to clean a tool with isopropyl alcohol and then use it to make marks. That way the tool doesn't stick as well. You can also thin the caulk with the alcohol to make it lay flat easier.

I do the same.

These are some 6 mm streams

Some 6 mm road

I used a broken up cocktail stick to give some extra texture and sort of wheel ruts.  The road just has a single drybrush of pale sand colour over the brown caulk

Are your stream banks made by building up the caulk?

Yes, I was going for a muddy road look, but thanks for the drybrushing tip!

Sort of.  I ran two thin beads next to each other then used the trusty wet finger to sort of splodge them together and smooth out the stream bed in between.
