Punjabi chevrons
« on: January 18, 2021, 01:04:36 AM »
Hello all,
I have a question: For Punjabi Regiments of the late 19th/early 20th century, what side were the NCO chevrons worn? Right sleeve, left sleeve or both?
Thanks.
Neil

No expert on this type of thing, but rummaging through my pictures the right sleeve seems to have been standard for the Indian Army in this time, be they Punjabi or otherwise. A small sample admittedly, but I didn't see a single one on the left sleeve.  So I think you are safe going with what RogerC said.

I concur with the "Chevrons on the Right Sleeve" replies, as that's where I've seen them in a handful of photos and illustrations showing Indian NCOs from various regiments.  The Perry "Victoria's Little Wars" Gurkhas have chevrons on both sleeves, and they are certainly known for accurate research, but maybe it only applies to Gurkhas.

If I remember rightly, heavies in Imperial service have chevrons on the right sleeve only. Rifles e.g. Gurkhas have them on both sleeves.
