Over-the-top scenery from the Evil Empire
« on: October 22, 2009, 09:04:16 PM »
I'm no great fan of Games Workshop, but when they do big blowout scenery projects, it's hard to beat them.

Their newest is a diorama, not a playable table, so they've been able to get ever more over the top in detailing and such.

Might want to get a napkin to wipe your drool up before you go look at all the big pictures of the "Assault on Magnir's Crag". (featuring Space Mutts vs Geiger-Still-Hasn't-Sued-Yet? Aliens)

(huge freakin' pictures, obviously. Anyone still lumbering along under dialup will probably want to skip that link...)

As a modelling project it's impressive, but the subject doesn't inspire me.

If you are defending (what appears to be some sort of castle) why do you go outside the walls ?
It doesn't make sense.

And if this is the 40th millenium, why are there so few casualties amongst the densely packed attackers ? Surely advances in weapons technology should shred 90% of the attackers before they even breathe on the wall ?
If the weapons are capable of that, there should be even more attackers.

I suppose it's a little reminiscent of some of the Renaissance battle scenes that appear in paintings and tapestries, but that's my gripe : the hand-to-hand savagery depicted by Durer etc was 5 centuries ago, one-shot weapons with low-quality munitions would probably encourage desperate charges and close quarter combat (although I suspect that the defenders would just shut the doors and go up onto the battlements)
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

You are right, Fastolfrus!

That is why all those EE Products and publications are sooo boring, regardless of their visual quality and their effort, modellingwise. In essence, they keep repeating other(not necessarily classical) artists' works and even themselves, too.

See back in the day when it was my job to make those type of boards for Games Day etc we always had tons of casualties. My favourite for that was the 'Vengeance of the Vampire' board where we got the GW stores to paint empire troops for us with each region getting a colour scheme. One of the regions was terrible at returning their figures, most of them didn't do it and of what came back more than half was too badly painted to use. So we had the few well painted figure making a last stand on a clifftop and turned the rest into casualty figures with a load of extras. Then told the regional heads which set was which and then watched the mockery of X region being overrun and slaughtered.
So many projects..... so little time.......

It doesn't make sense.

For starters, they're space 'rines. More interested in impressing ol' gold-throney than actually fighting properly. And it's 40k where we see infantry doing banzai-toshi with bayonets and horse-mounted mongols rushing armed and armored enemy positions with lances. And it's a castle, not a bunker or other sensible strong point.

I love all the detail and whatnot that was crammed into this scene otherwise. definitely digging the one picture where a space mutt snatched a warrior's fleshhooks even if I doubt he could have fast enough reflexes in that chunky armor for such a maneuver .

Don't try to apply logic. It's epic. (How come I think of King Crimson every time I see 40K dioramas?) Anyway, I don't like GW aesthetics  but the craft put into that board is inspiring.

Most people could do that sort of thing if they had the "Here are two thousand plastic sprues, go and make something" type of company they work for. They also get paid for it.

@ fastolfrus - Unfotunately, it's GW. Reality is left at the station!

I still like it though  ;D

Nice  :D I found some piccies of the diorama here:

I like the display, it's inspirational and well executed. Of course paintjobs on individual models (especially 'nids) aren't all great but the effect is there. I particularly like the water features 8)

I'd love the time and talent for such an endeavor.  Not a GW fan but that is some great stuff!
