Day 1 of this weekend's British Lead Adventurers Meeting (BLAM), and today I was privileged to take part in the inaugural outing of Senor Malamute's fantastic San Antonio de Bejar board, for a game featuring Malamute's equally fantastic new range of Zorro figures.
As I managed to snap off a few pics in the course of the game, here they are, with my slightly garbled account of the action
With Malamute presiding, the players were:
Thunderchicken: The wicked Governer and party
Jollybob: El Zorro!
Driscoles: El Capitan + Presidiales
Captain Blood: Sargento Garcia + Presidiales
SvennnDHnut: The Seguin family of vaquero-bandidos
Gamer Mac: Davy Crockett and other assorted Gringo treasure-hunters...
The scenario was pretty simple - in the town of San Antonio De Bejar, the feelthy peons are queueing up to pay their taxes to the wicked Governer.
Zorro is aiming to relieve the forces of repression of their loot to redistribute it to the poor. He's also after a smooch with the Governer's daughter.
Meanwhile two roving gangs also hit town hoping for a shot at the tax collection - Davy Crockett and assorted Texian compadres, and a villainous looking gang of vaquero types...
The rules were a cut down version of LOTOW, with a few spontaneous interpretations and additions by our esteemed Gamesmaster....
Here's how it went...
The feelthy peons queue up to pay their taxes...
While the Governer, his lovely daughter (or is it his grandmother?), and El Colonel watch from a safely hygenic distance on a balcony overlooking the square...
Meanwhile, whilst Sargento Garcia and a squad of brave (ahem... ) Presidiales patrol one corner of the town...
Davy Crockett and a bunch of Texian Ne'er-do-wells, sneak in another...
Whilst some ugly looking vaquero characters (albeit wearing superbly painted blankets) swagger across the square in front of the church...
Quite a lot of action ensued - most of which I failed to capture on camera as my Presidiales were far too busy firing inaccurately, reloading, falling off ladders, running backwards and forwards a lot, firing again, and generally failing to hit anything.
Suffice to say, Davy Crockett and co met a fast and sticky end at the hands of Driscoles' Presidiales.
The vaquero-bandidos fared better, wiping out El Capitan's squad - but neither got anywhere near the loot because...
Guess who?
Caramba! It's Zorro!
In a pure Hollywood routine, he thundered into view...
Dodged the flying musket balls of my gallant Presidiales (although I did manage to shoot the peasant girl who got in the way - so that's something)
Thundered across the square (still dodging the bullets from my Presidiales lining the rooftops...)
Vaulted into his saddle, and leapt up on the balcony to steal a kiss from the Governer's lovely elderly female relative...
Leapt down again to engage in furious swordplay with El Capitan and Los Presidiales... (sadly, you can't actually see this derring-do in this picture, 'cos the scenery got in the way... )
Then vaulted back onto his horse, swept up the chest of loot, and thundered off down a side alley - impervious to the hail of shot poured into him at point blank range by my myopic troopers lining the rooftops and chasing after him...
Our hero thundered once around the square in a lap of honour, reared up in spectacular style, and thundered off into the sunset.
Actually, I did finally manage to wing the blighter as he galloped out of sight, but nothing was going to stop him today
And here, for the record are a couple of views of some (but not all) of the protagonists.
I trust they don't mind their identities being revealed. Too late now
Malamute the impresario, Svennn the bandido and Jollybob the Fox (actually JB appears to be suffering megalomanic delusional schizophrenia as he thinks he is both Spartacus
and Zorro... )
Gamer Mac looks on ruefully as Davy Crockett's expedition bites the dust of San Antonio. Malamute commiserates (possibly... )
All in all, a fast, furious, and bloodthirsty game, which played out in true Hollywood style. You couldn't have made it up, really...
Well done Malamute - superb terrain, superb figures, and a really entertaining game...
And well done Jollybob - Zorro won.
(Well of course he did - who would have had it any other way?)
