Jungle Scenery Question
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:12:33 AM »
I've seen some pretty amazing jungle scenery on this (and other boards).

Any tips you would like to share?
I've got some plastic GW things lying around that I repainted. They look okay but it's not nearly enough.
I tried a shop that sells plastic aquarium plants, but that turned out rather expensive.
I'm hoping for some specials (flesh eating, walking, ... plants) and maybe some tips on getting some affordable trees/plants and thoughts on basing them.

Thanks from the expedition that will head into the jungle one fine gaming day.

Cool Jungle terrain making is realy easy but you need time for that .
I use a lot of different thinks but mostly real wood branch, Model train foliage and Plasti plants .
Plastik Plants are cheap here only a few € but you need different ones to make the trrain look better .If you can´t get them cheap I can buy you a few .

have a look at my site for what I mean

I'm still planning some jungleterrain myself. Haven't started yet but found some links where they sell suitable plastic plants.

I haven't seen these in shops overhere (Netherlands) but maybe someone knows where they are sold.

In the Uk some of the £1 shops (I expect there are some 1 euro shops on the mainland that this would apply too) that sometimes sell plastic plants but they are seasonal. Plastic roses in February (for cheapskate Valentines), other plastic plants for Mother's Day, I've seen some plastic "garlands" at Christmas, just green leaves like ivy, that work well.

For gnarled trees, like mangrove swamps, I found some plastic "bonsai" type trees decorating a jewellery store window. The shop had spares that they didn't want. Shop decorations are actually quite good if you get there when they are changing them over, the staff are usually happy to just get rid of the old ones (especially if they look dusty or damaged). You can sometimes get damaged pieces from florists too.

Car boot sales/fleamarkets sometimes have cheap toy trees that are worth aquiring to vandalise, some toy farm sets are quite good for foliage. (Britains used to have a very good range of trees, markeed as 1/32 scale but look like mature trees alongside 28mm figures, hard to find now). I have even used some Playmobil pieces occasionally.

For jungle terrain I use a mix of aquarium plants and cheap plastic palm trees. I got 30 trees for 10 dollars (CDN) at a cake decorating store.

I've just found some really good looking trees by Schleich.
Not cheap, but impressively large, only seen oak trees so far (25 & 32 cm tall, so mature trees for 28mm figures), but the catalogue also lists acacia, mopane and African boabab trees due for release sometime in May, and the pictures look interesting.

Thanks for the tips & hints , guys.
Grimm, although I did visit your site before, it was a great inspiration to look at all the cool pics again with the jungle scenery in the back of my head.

Good call also on that warfactory site there. I remember visiting it long ago but I forgot all about it.

Anyhow, my quest for suitable plants has been victorious :)
I did manage to find a store or 2 where they sold plastic plants and a friend of mine brought some aswell. So now I got loads of material to work with.
Finally I can paint up that tarzan I got lying around :)

..hmm...now to find some dino's and some more wildlife...

Thanks again

For dinosaurs, I notice that Magister Militum have got a rapidly expanding range in metal, although scale is small some of the original creatures were pretty large and don't look out of place with 28mm.
Otherwise, again Schleich have some nice looking pieces in their range that don't look unreasonable.
