Colonial House
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:53:50 PM »
I am building a couple of buildings for VSF games. The first one is a colonial type house.

I am looking for some help with the roof.
I have three choices
Plain wooden roof – basically as is but with some battens to mark out the individual panels of the roof.
Corrugated Iron roof – I have a load of corrugated card I could use.
Tiled roof – use thin card to make the tiles
The question is what do you think is the best option.

I think you need to determine Where it will typically be found, deep frontier , nearer towns etc. The roof material would be more permanent, heavier built near towns. Im thinking Corrugated metal though would be just the ticket, and differ it from so many shingled roofs floating about :)

Yes, I've also pondered the origins of corrugated metal: it's been around since mid 1800s I believe, so go for it :)

I'd also suggest some more supports closer to the steps as it appears to be sagging a little. Doesn't appear to be happening around the entire house, might just be the angle :)

I really like this, very peculiar design.

Can't wait to see it finito

Nice work GM.  :)

In my humble opinion I would use corrugated iron as it seems to pop up all over the colonies.
Don't!

Super construction, I can not wait to see it finished. :-* :-*
for the roof, I would put corrugated iron

I think it is just the picture. I have rechecked it and it looks straight in real life.
Do you think it is a peculiar design? I though it look quite representative of the type of building I was after. I looked through the web for some pictures and this was a simplified version of what I found.

I have scribed the foam board to represent wooden planks. Only the corner pillars are going to be stone.

The stone work is cut out of high density foam, pink stuff from B&Q.

All
It looks like I will be covering the roof in corrugated iron.

Thanks Guys

Thats brilliant gM. I think it captures the feel perfectly. Corrugated roofing will look good and fit in but I would have perhaps tried for a woven matting type of affair

My vote is for corrogated iron. It was used in many colonies but photo's of South Africa show it everywhere.
So many projects..... so little time.......

That's looking lovely.  Will you be doing the inside?

Corrugated iron roofing will be very good, especially for an industrialised South African mining community or similar.  For a tea planatation I think I'd have gone for rattan or something similarly fiborous but whatever you choose it's going to be nice.

I agree the thatch type roof may look good as well but I think it is harder to achieve the right look. I think an iron roof will be easier.
As for doing the inside, I intend for the roof to lift off so that figures can be placed inside but apart from painting the floor to look like wood and painting the walls I don't intend to do anything else.

With a removeable roof you could always make an alternative rattan one afterwards and have a building for duel locations?
