For gothic horror wargaming what films and books put you in the mood?

The new Wolfman looks like it could fit the bill.

Taking Gothic Horror in its original context of a combination of horror and romance, you could probably include the movies Black Sunday, with Barbara Steele; the original The Haunting of Hill House; some of the Poe adaptations - The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher et al; Salem's Lot (the book really creeps me out every time I read it) and even The Keep.

Speaking of Salem's Lot...My cousin happened to be at home alone one night while her husband was at work and was reading the novel.  He came home early and made the mistake of tapping on the window as he went by.  I believe she eventually forgave him! It didn't help matters that the house they were living in at the time was reputed to be haunted! My cousin did experience a couple of unexplained happenings when she was there.  The female side of my family seems to have a slight streak of psychic awareness - my maternal grandmother apparently saw a few things as well.  The girls always have all the fun.

I've always liked the movie "From Beyond."  "Lair of the White Worm" is pretty good, too.

Just about all of the Hammer horror films, particularly the Dracula series. Nobody does decent Gothic horror anymore in the movies, Coppola's Dracula was ok, but nothing has come near to it recently.

That new Wolfman movie on the otherhand looks like it may come up trumps.

The BBC Dracula made in 1977 with louis Jordan is pretty good and follows the story reasonably well. It does look a little dated now though.

And you should read Dracula. The chase at the end with Dracula trying to reach the castle before sunset makes for a great game.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, for all your headless horseman needs. The Tim Burton movie is good too, but too camp to be actually scary. Johnny Depp is pretty good value though.

Also, From Hell by Alan Moore for Ripper adventures. Read the graphic novel and avoid the film (again with Johnny Depp, but bloody awful Dick van Dyke accents from the American cast).

Like Sleepy Hollow, I don't know if this properly counts as Gothic horror as I always imagine that to be more high Victorian, but try and find a dvd of The Company Of Wolves. It often gets dismissed as a kid's film as its basically a retelling of Red Ridinghood, but it is dark, dreamlike and in parts very disturbing (check out the banquet scene where the guests start transforming  ).

DRACULA AND FRANKENSTIEN ARE BOTH FREE DOWNLOADS AT THE MOMENT FOR THE I-PHONE FROM APPLE-ITUNES,THE NOVELS THAT IS ,NOT THE MOVIES.

I actually liked/own the From Hell movie despite the D-van-D accents (I guess we Americans are too ignorant of the proper accent to notice.)

I would also recommend the old BBC series Murder Rooms featuring Dr. Bell and Mr. Doyle and some of the BBC Sherlock Holmes stuff as well.
