non-slip vinyl in the US
« on: April 28, 2007, 04:42:03 PM »
I just came across this: http://www.warfactory.co.uk/scenery/citytarmac.php

Its perfect for a project I'm working on, but I'm not sure where to look for this sort of vinyl. Anyone know what type of stores in the US would carry something like this? I'm thinking maybe Lowes/Home Depot.

a quick perusal of www.lowes.com:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=105383-61-51011031&lpage=none

Armstrong
12" x 12" Marquis Self-Stick Commercial Vinyl Floor Tile - Black

Item #: 105383       Model: 51011031

i can't tell how the surface is 3D but it look slike a rough "sand" to be scale Tarmac.  i need to return a power tool this week to Lowe's, so i shall endeavor to check for you - but it may be a few days

You'd probably have to get it straight from the company, given that this is a fairly specialized flooring material. I'd recommend checking out commercial upholsterers as well--the kinds of places that do automotive interior refinishing or restaurant furniture construction. You might be able to get the end of a roll or sheet scraps for relatively inexpensively.

My brother's an architect. Let me ask him if he can get this.

Thanks for the link, the site is absolutely awesome! That guy paints in the classic 80's style, which is my favourite painting style, ever!  :o

Has anyone had any luck finding a US source for this stuff.  The Polyflor item Warfactory uses seems to be available only in the UK.  I went to Lowes to see if they had any of the Armstrong stuff, but they don't seem to sell it in my area.  I need some some for a project that's bouncing around in my head.

Thanks.

I was doing some thinking awhile back, and this seems like as good a place as any to post this idea.  For urban streets, or even for a highway, made in sections about a foot long, why not just use sheets of sandpaper glued to a mdf backer?  It would have ideal surface texture for concrete if you got a fine enough grit to work with, and would paint up fairly easily, I would say a black or medium gray undercoat and then just drybrush a time or two with a large brush, presto!

i was having similar thought as well, but also to utilize used, worn out paper, with bare patches and smoothed section to give it a "driven on" look.  it was really just an idea to recycle the dead pieces off the hand sander, but it really jumped on my brain when i hit a few pot holes the snow ate out of the road

IN the USA there is already a company who sells ready made roads, these might be of use?

When I used to do 1/300 micro armour back in the 70's, that's exactly what I did [well, without the mdf]. I used fine grade "wet & dry" paper, as luckily my Grandad owned a DIY shop & I got loads of free gaming-friendly scenic stuff. :)

I just had green-painted boards in those days, so blu-tacked the roads onto it. It looked pretty convincing for 1/300, so no reason why a coarse grade shouldn't work for 28mm. The wet and dry is already a dark grey, so would just need some dry-brushing.

 :o
Oh no, the risk to ruin a mini with SANDPAPER is too much for me. :x

Honestly these I try to have the scenery as soft as it gets.
Alcantara (artificial suede leather) as a tabletop cover, fur for tall grass etc.
Just so much more confortable for the minis!

IMO all the sand stuff is just good for photos but not for playing!
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Typical =/
Stuff like that would have been super but i've already taken enough chances with US orders for a while now..

I'll have to try and track down the nonslip stuff here instead..
Another idea i've had for roads is some sort of roofing material i've seen in building supply stores, but that comes in huge rolls..

I must politely disagree with the roads from Scenic Express.  I bought one as a test and promptly threw it in a box after inspection.  It is are very felt-ish and doesn't even look remotely realistic. I think it's better fit for a Christmas house display or something similar.  :?   My 2 cents.
