All Purpose SF Skirmish?
« on: May 03, 2007, 01:18:04 AM »
Help! I need rules that will let me play:
1. Warlord of Mars games
2. Road Warrior-type man-to-man and vehicle skirmish
3. Something to use my 1999 minis with!

Small groups of 10-15 minis at most, not too campy, but not ultra-detailed charts for every weapon/ super-detailed/ anal retentive Hard SF.

Any ideas? I'm becoming more and more of a Rattrap fan, so I'm hoping their SF ruleset will hit the mark.

Since I have pictures of Marc in compromising positions with a goat, I've had a chance to look over Fantastic Worlds. It'll work perfectly for Warlords of Mars, doesn't explicitly have provision for Mad Max style car chases, and has some other nice features.

We're going to use it to play Star Trek. Illumisar has promised to run "Corn Bugle of Doooooooom!" at some point in the near future. Like next month.

I don't mean to gloat, but I think it'll work. I'd have no problem moving the vehicle rules from .45 Adventures into FW.

Thank you Sir! I was hoping you'd say that...

Playing Star Trek w/ a miniatures game seems like the Great Conjunction of the Nerd Universe. I may have to try it! :D

for Warlord of Mars, like Pete suggested, Fantastic Worlds was the first to come to mind.  a work like the Mars series needs a character-centric game to keep the flavor of the genre.  correct me if i'm incorrect, but i assumes Warlord of Mars was one of sparks of the genre that Fantastic Worlds entails?

i believe Gloire is great for the genre it represents, .45 Adventures, likewise: logical extension, Fantastic Worlds... :D

for Road Warrior, i may suggest Chain Reaction 2.0.  i have heard things about 5150 but don't have it, haven't read it, so i can't say.  i haven't seen the movie to truly base judgment on, sorry

and these 1999 figures:  i've only seen them once or twice on the web, never "in person".  please tell me more.

I'm a big fan of vehicle chases. I've been wanting to do one in .45 Adventures for quite some time. I actually think .45A has most of the tools necessary to do a Road Warrior game in place. The one thing it would require would be vehicle charts similar to character charts. You need to twist Rich's arm to release some of those. (if that doesn't work, contact me. I created some truck and car charts for a campaign game I was going to run and still have them here somewhere)

Fantastic Worlds won't bring that much more to the table unless you want to include flying vehicles in the mix. (of course you want to. Think about it...)

If you are wanting to do Warlord of Mars games, well, we're your huckleberry. Everything you need will be included in Fantastic Worlds. Swashbuckling Heroes, 4 armed aliens, horrible alien monsters, flying ships...

Here's a vote for Savage Worlds Showdown.  I play Star Wars skirmish games with the rules.  I know guys who play LOTS of pulp games with them, and there are conversions for everything in between.

The rules can be downloaded for FREE here: http://www.peginc.com/Games/Savage%20Worlds/Downloads/Showdown/Showdown.pdf

Also take a look at the Test Drive rules for Savage Worlds (another free download):

Take a look at all of the conversions that are available at Savage Heroes:

Here's my Star Wars conversion:

Thanks for all the tips! (And yes, now I do want flying vehicles!)

As for 1999, here is RobH's excellent site:

And my own painted stuff is here:

Great minis, cool game, but dead and gone.

Any of you Euros out there, I'm still looking for the minis that never made it to the US, so drop me a line if you have anything! Even if you don't want to sell, as I'd be thrilled just to see them...

man-to-man and vehicle skirmish

This is the difficult thing. Most ski-fi rules can't give you fast and exciting vehicle-races and -combats. And I never read any rules which were good for both purposes, man-to-man and vehicle combat.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

I hate to toot my own horn (especially since I'm new to these boards) but I'd allow to beg to differ.

There is such a set of rules, and I'm currently using them myself (heck, I wrote them) for all of my Post-Apocalypse skirmish gaming. It's called Road Warriors and is a small supplement that I wrote for the freeware ruleset No Limits.

Both can be accquired here: http://www.wargamesunlimited.com/nolimits/index.html

Cheers and Happy Gaming!
