I don't think you want to go quite that far. You need to find a compromise between a heavily-manicured English thatched roof and one that looks like somebody's hair. Thatch in other parts of the world is not always as tight and tidy as that (those European-style ones are often in a mesh frame, and are trimmed to it).....

The main thing is to stop it looking like hair, but not go so far as to make it look like a lawn.

There's an obvious differnce between thatch made with straw and that made with palm fronds. Personally I incline towards the terry towelling approach, certainly for the former. Given that one can now buy reasonably convincing sheets of pretty much any roofing material, slate, corrugated iron, tiles etc in miniature from modl railroad suppliers, it's always surprised me why one of them doesn't produce some sheets of various 'natural' roofing. Bound to be a hit.

Give the fur a good combing and trim it as you see fit with a beard-trimmer or scissors to give the fur the appropriate density and any layering effect you want to impart.
Once you wet the fur with whatever glue or acrylic media you are using to fix it, comb it carefully to get it into position.
It ought to be simple enough to find a comb with the appropriate 'tooth' for what you want to achieve. I cut one end off of the comb I use in order to avoid the obvious mark that the final large tooth left behind. You might want to do the same.

Here is an example of thatch made with brown teddy bear fur on a few huts I've made for my 20mm Vietnam games:

To add to Mr Peabody, use the comb to work it into flat layers too, I also use a piece of stong thread to push down at even intervals to make it look like thatch 'slices' if you know what i mean. But do cut it evenly at the edges and try to build on the worked look.

Is this still LAF or the Hair Forum with Julian and Sandy?
